Sonic Waves….Boston/Don’t Look Back

The self titled album Boston sold millions and millions and millions of copies in 1976(and to this day was well). It was probably 1981 or so and my pal John Young(Missing In Action in 2015) had the self titled and when I was at his place i seen the cover of the debut and of course the saucer in space with the Boston logo caught my eye and when I flipped over the cover here was the dudes behind the classic debut and WOWZERS whose the dude with the FRO! That’s Sib Hashian drummer that one blew my mind! Ha!

So in the summer of 1981 it was off to Winnipeg with my family and two of my purchases were Santers Shot Down In Flames(reviewed here) and on cassette tape Don’t Look Back the followup to the debut!

Don’t Look Back was released in 1978 and I guess you could say it was a continuation of the debut but for me being my first purchase of there’s this one sticks to me for some crazy reason….

Lemme explain…..and tell Ya the Sonics that Tom Scholz/Brad Delp/Barry Goudreau/Fran Sheehan and Mr Sib provided….

DONT LOOK BACK- ahhhh there’s Tommys guitar and what a great tone and opening riff and boom here comes the bass, drums some real cool tambourine and Brad Delps voice! love the end of it when the big power riff ends the tune fades out and powers up! This is a great opening number and Shit Ya if I was to do a Arena Rock compilation disc this would be track one!

THE JOURNEY- some diddling around like a spacey interlude all one minute and forty of it..spacey keyboards I guess you could say!

ITS EASY-this a good straight ahead easy peasy rock track! Acoustic guitars mixed with the electrics propell this tune forward and it has a  quick little tempo changes and the vocals like Delp always does delivers it home!

A MAN I’LL NEVER BE-hey this track clocks in just under 6 minutes and this is epic Boston! The song is a good representation of there sound when they were firing on all cylinders in regards to big rock sounds!

FEELIN SATISFIED- Deke sez….’this is in my top 3 all time fav Boston tracks!” Yep what a great beginning with Delp of course and man love the pre chorus it is the shit! Love the guitar and the handclaps and Delp asking ‘Are you Feeling Satisfied.” And than right into the chorus!  Man this one is just soooooooooo good! Love the guitar and you know the rumour floating around is that Scholz did all the instruments on this album and had Delp do the lead vocals! I guess if that’s true that sucks for those other guys but back than I thought it was a band! Kinda like how Bon Goofy(Jovi) fooled us that he was saying that Bon Jovi was a band! Ahhhh ok pal I guess if you call salaried musicians your playing with a band well! C’mon call it a band don’t deceive us!     Seriously though watch the live video of Boston playing live back in 1978! (Love the colour angle shots and the black and white shots by the camera crew….can you say Blow!)Hahaha….

PARTY-speaking of Blow. Party is the brother to Smokin from the debut! Boston wants you to know that if your gonna get spaced out get spaced out with them! The song is a feel good song Delp delivers the vocals only like he can and Scholz cranks his guitar loud cuz hey it’s a Party. love the riff during the chorus and after all is said and done it will be time for Smokin! Hahahaha….

USED TO BAD NEWS-another mid tempo rocker with and there’s a lot of it on this record acoustic but Sib his drums (and his Fro )propel the song forward!

DONT BE AFRAID- Boston ends the album with one of these end of the album Gems! Big sound, big guitar, over the top vocals it’s all here just dial up 866-AOR-ROCK and have all things delivered to you sonically! The song just wants you leaving more and well it took 8 years of finally hearing more….But…..check back here in 2 days (Wednesday) and ummmm well just come back…..

IN CONCLUSION-Don’t Look Back when I think of it had a real sound to it as I guess Scholz knew what he was doing as the Sonics are huge on this! For my first time Boston purchase this is a great record sure over time I bought the debut and well what can you say about that one that already hasn’t been said? Exactly,so I thought what the hell it’s time for some real cool AOR Rock here and well Don’t Look Back a new day is breaking!

  1. Looooove that title track. You know, with Boston, I think you can make the case that you only need the first two albums. No greatest hits required.

Great review Deke, love your style as I have said before. You should insert a link to the Santers review you reference! Unless you don’t want to go link crazy like me.

    1. Thanks Mikey….I can’t seem to get the link to work even when I type your guys WordPress sites it stays in black print….before I never had that problem….I need to,go,link crazy….

  2. I’m probably more of a Hits guy with this band, but that’s likely only because I haven’t heard too many of their actual records. I do see them at the junk shop, now and again, so now your write-up leads me to think I shouldn’t pass them by! Right on, Dude!
