SONIC WAVES…..AC/DC/Flick Of The Switch

Just like Van Halen. What the hell am I gonna add in regards to a ACDC review? Well basically like all the  others in the Sonic Waves category my spin on it and how it impacted me as a listener at a certain time (1983,if were keeping score) and how I still love certain releases which I consider favourites all these years later. So kick back, have a laugh (I hope) and throw down some 2 cents of comments if you like…..

1983 , I guess the juggernaut release that year in the hard rock  circles was Leppards Pyromania release sales wise. For me two releases stand out from 1983 and that would be Iron Maidens Piece Of Mind(don’t worry followers a review is a comin) and ACDC’s Flick Of The Switch. All these years  later Flick Of The Switch is perhaps next to Powerage my fav ACDC album if I had to choose. Those two ACDC releases are very similar to me in sound, style, and just a plain we don’t give a shit mentality. The only difference is obviously one is with Bon the other with Brian. Bottom line is just straight ahead heavy blues rock. Gone was the Mutt Lange productions of the previous  three albums instead ACDC took there own control at the production dials. No Frills Riff N Roll and for Deke back in August of 1983 that’s ok.

RISING POWER- gets the proceedings going.” Dog day it’s Tuesday!”sings Johnson and the album starts off like any ACDC album,a song about humping and more humping ..silly like you had to ask! Very catchy chorus and solo as well but it’s Angus soloing as well silly!

THIS HOUSE IS ON FIRE-Angus and Malcolm are dousing your living room with gasoline and a spark sets off and that’s Cliff and Phil laying down the law with a groove before the fire truck shows up!  You better tell the neighbours to vacate as well. Cool riffs and rhythms ,man this song cooks and not in a Breaking Bad kinda way..well maybe!

FLICK OF THE SWITCH- this is ACDC at there best. They riff n roll with the best of them. This isn’t Einstein literature here folks. It’s Johnson telling ya she’s gonna blow you all sky high with a Flick Of The Switch. Man Malcolm rocks rhythms like no other!  This is ACDC Australian barroom boogie at its finest!

NERVOUS SHAKEDOWN- Angus kicks off the song and Phil and the rest of the fellas join in. It’s basically ACDC taking on the law and the law trying to shake down ACDC in front of the judge. Cool slow paced rocker. And yeah good luck locking up ACDC,you have a better chance at hell freezin over.

LANDSLIDE-ACDC get a free out of jail pass after the Nervous Shakedown Expierence and speed things up with this boogie number and head straight to the bar! ACDC end Side 1 with a tuff little nugget of a track !

GUNS FOR HIRE-starts with Angus shooting off his Gibson SG like its a semi automatic. Take cover and boom the drums and the rest of the fellas join and here we go! This song has one of my favourite Angus solos ever. And side two starts off like any other ACDC album side twos start off, more songs about humping! Silly!

DEEP IN THE HOLE- quote’ Can’t touch both walls. The further down I go. Pulls the strings on my  violin bow. Makes me sing when she fires my load. Ain’t no slave, you do what your told” end quote. What the hell else could I possibly add to that!..cool tune regardless!

BEDLAM IN BELGIUM – sounds like the ACDC boys got into some trouble in Belgium. This is basically someone causing trouble and ACDC ain’t taking shit on board ! Especially when someone gets poked with the gun. Perhaps messing with the Mayor of Belgiums daughter? This song is catchy ACDC with riffs galore and solos galore ….I love this stuff!

BADLANDS- once ACDC gets out of Belgium there into the desert with the tumbleweeds and of course women! Basically this like if ACDC got into a punch up with ZZTOP. Badlands would come about. Angus as always carries the tune. This song can knock ya out and you won’t know what hit ya!

BRAINSHAKE-ends the album with the boys relaxing with more women, holy crap perhaps that’s why I loved this album than. It’s basically learning about the birds and bees ! My high school teacher should have just played the whole Flick Of The Switch album in sex education class!

IN CONCLUSION-sure ACDC Did not move as many copies as this as the previous two ACDC albums(BIB AND FTATR) who cares this boogie woogie fest took me from my humble abode in Tbay to Belgium and back to the Badlands with arrests, crazy women, shakedowns, and Angus shooting off round after on round on his guitar. Whew a classic indeed!

Enter Sandman Hi-Jacks The Night Train

Guns N Roses/Metallica/ Faith No More/Minneapolis/Sept 15 1992

So the two biggest selling bands of the early 90s touched down in Minneapolis on a co-headline jaunt with tension amongst the ranks in the bands, in other words, Axl VS everybody and Metallica cruising with a 5th member (John Marshall) filling in for James’s guitaring as he was almost cooked by pyro in Montreal. So there we are that day headed towards the Metrodome in Minneapolis and it’s basically a big cement pit with a white roof on top that can hold 50,000 people and man it was humid outside that day so to get into an air-conditioned cement pit was welcome to me and my buddy Al who made the trip down with me on a party bus! Once in we got into the building which was around 6 30 pm and took our seats that were lower level at center field, Faith No More was already into there set. Once I sat down and adjusted my eyes towards the stage which was a ways away I could see the band. I could hear Mike Patton but could not see him. It wasn’t till I started watching the screens that Patton was laying down on the ground on his back singing ….uh ok, pal and this continued basically until they ended with there hit song Epic! Thanks for coming out Mike Patton.

Now after a quick changeover it was Metallica’s turn….boom were into Creeping Death, Harvester Of Sorrow, Welcome Home (Sanitarium ), Sad But True, Wherever I May Roam, Of Wolf And Man and For Whom The Bell Tolls, holy shit these Tallica dudes are relentless in driving your head into the cement foundations of the Metrodome,50,000 people chanting Die,Die, Die,Pyro(watch out James)  going off left right Center. Pass me the Ibuprofen, please.

Thank God they’re taking a breather by playing The Unforgiven, and now it’s back to metal with Shortest Straw, Fade To Black(awesome), Master Of Puppets, Seek And Destroy and Whiplash, man that was a ton of metal and wait for it ….here comes the encore…..

Nothing Else Matters, Am I Evil?, Last Caress and the best pyro display I ever saw One…..crap I’m exhausted…..oh wait ..Metallica splits off stage and comes out and rips out Enter Sandman and then says adios and splits for good!

Metallica played almost a good two and a half hours…..

Geez, I wonder how much time it will take for Axl to stroll up to the stage? After a not too long of a wait(hard to believe) Out of the gate comes Gunners with new recruit Gilby Clarke, and the Guns hit the ground running with Outta Get Me(great opener of a song) followed by Welcome To The Jungle, Mr Brownstone, Live And Let Die, Attitude, Bad Obsession (complete with 3  female horn players), shall we notch it up with Double Talkin Jive, Civil War, by this point I’m like holy crap Gunners are matching the intensity set by Metallica now that is impressive, no sooner so I think that than a loud poof is released. That poof is the energy of the building being let out by a 10-minute version of Wild Horses(great song but 10-minute jam ?? After Metallica?) well maybe Axl will ramp it up? Nope how about Patience! Holy crap the oxygen is being sucked outta me. Geez, guys crank it up will ya please your losing all 50,000 Do you think Gunners heard me ?? Cue November Rain ?? Shit, Axl put the baby grand piano away and here comes another 10 minutes of well Axl blowing his testosterone all over the Metrodome. Whew, can’t believe it ok, now what’s on tap? How about a Matt Sorum drum solo? Good drummer but we have lost a good 40 minutes of momentum here folks……

But wait here comes some energy from the stage yep cue Sorum segueing into You Could Be Mine. Yeah, I think this is one of Gunners coolest tracks. The crowd comes to life were back. Sweet Child O Mine follows and everyone is rocking out and to close it out, Axl tosses his Mic in the crowd waves and splits!! Now that’s better buddy, that’s what I do expect, a quick Axl escape.

Gunners do return with a little too long sing along with Knockin On Heavens Door and to cap it off Paradise City ends with a flurry of fireworks! The show is officially over! Axl stayed sane!

IN CONCLUSION – now I don’t do these for concert reviews but I have too for this concert! Axl should have put his ego aside and let Metallica close the show as there was no way you could keep the energy up after Metallica drove the Metal bus off of the cliff.  Gunners hung in there though but that over a  half-hour where they chilled out in the show they just had a hard time sustaining any crowd energy after that (in my eyes anyway).  Compared to when I have seen Gunners in May of 91, this version with the horns, backing singers was just too much. I preferred the Alpine show much better(6 piece band)it was cool catching this tour because this was the end of an era so to speak, not that anyone knew. Two of the biggest hard rock bands at the time playing stadiums and playing full sets!

The crinkled ticket was due to a flash food that happened outside the dome while we were inside rocking (remember the humidity I talked about earlier?!) Our bus was stranded so we had to foot it back to our hotel(a story for another time!) so needless to say I was drenched! It was worth it though…

Kings X/Kilroy’s (Bar)

It’s spring 2006!  Yours Truly,my brother Todd and about 98 others are standing around in a Tbay bar waiting for yep you guessed it…KINGS X !

Like is this not crazy!!

Kings X the band everyone loves so  who knows why this show was  poorly attended but give the band credit like true professionals they played just under 2 hours. Give local promoter Frank Lofreddo credit for letting the show go on! Kings X were plugging their latest release ‘Ogre Tones’ which is a fine damn record. Dug,Jerry,Ty think so as well as the first six songs from Ogre Tones are played live at the show….Bebop!

These guys were awesome they all sang lead and backing harmonies from the opener Groove Machine til the end  with Over My Head. Dugs bass almost tore my head off when he went into DOGMAN ! Gotta love those 8&12 string Hamer  basses ….massive bottom end!….

After the show the guys stuck around and signed CDs (had them sign my copy of Ear Candy as that is my fav of there’s!), pics whatever was handed to em…they were super cool laid back hippies that just so happen play Loud Rock! I was glad I went man….what a band…..

Thunder Bay …You Snooze….You Loose!

Dr Feelgood Kick Starts The Heart!

June15 1990/Motley Crue/Tesla/ Winnipeg Arena

So one of the biggest arena tours of 1990 was Motley Crue. Tons and tons of copies of there latest works Dr. Feelgood were moving out of the stores quicker than you could say Cheese! So when the Crue announced the Feelgood show in Winnipeg I and TBone pounced on tickets and got some good seats and an added bonus was the inclusion of Tesla who was a very good band with two very solid albums in the racks with Mechanical Resonance and The Great Radio Controversy. So we were pumped what a double bill.

So come June were ready and we are sitting in the Winnipeg Arena out go the lights and outcomes Tesla and they open with Cover Queen off of the Resonance album. Cool never would have guessed that one as an opener! They played tracks of course like Hang Tough, Love Song, Modern Day Cowboy, Little Suzi, Heavens Trail, The Way It Is, and closed it out with Cumin Atcha Live! Holy crap what a great opening band! Hey, Nikki Sixx you better bring your A-game tonight!

After a quick set change…the lighting rig lowers down and on it you can see a laser print of Allister Fiend and he introduces the Crue and up from below the stage comes the 4 LA Tattooed dudes tackling Kick Start My Heart with there two backing singers on prerecorded backing vocals(I think) and were off. You want pyro, check. You want Flames, check, check. You want to cuss, three checks. This show was over the top. Man the Crue blasted out hit after hit, Red Hot, Looks That Kill, Shout At The Devil, Live Wire, Same Ol Situation, Wild Side, complimentary Mick Mars guitar solo, Girls, Girls, Girls, and of course an over the top Tommy Lee drum solo where he rode along a rail and played a second drum set and drummed along to samples of his favorite songs ie.Houses Of The Holy. I still remember him telling us that this was no Bon Jerk-Off (Bon Jovi)show! Slick looking stage. Man, this is the 90s….and I and TBone are lapping it up and so is the sellout crowd of 12,000.

Dr. Feelgood the song ended the Crues regular set and TBone made the comment that the Crue in the first 90 minutes of there show did not play one ballad! Holy crap TBone your right it’s just one rocker after another. I think the Crue was smart with that move. They just rammed pyro, fire, smoke, and lasers into our senses!  Tbone and I were declared legally brain dead.

The Crue came out and for the encore played Home Sweet Home(had too) and Don’t Go Away Mad with the house lights on! Cool effect. The Crue were on top of there game back in 1990 more importantly Vince Neil actually showed up and performed before he morphed into well…you be the judge!

Why the Crue never documented this tour via video/cd/cassette back then who the hell knows! The Crue was never or better than they were at that point. Especially when the following year when they put out Primal Scream(song) which was a lot of people’s favs and then Vince quit/booted and that was that! All upward momentum was lost…

Me and TBone had heard at the show before Winnipeg which was in Calgary that the Crue ended there show after 55 minutes due to what they called ‘not feeling comfortable” whatever the hell that means! Fortunately, I and T got our money’s worth in the Peg!

SONIC WAVES…..Ace Frehley/Ace Frehley

2014 holy heck! Who woulda thunk  it that Space Ace still has a solid album of rock n roll left in his tank with his current release (Space Invaders). If you’re chuckling and don’t believe me check out LeBrains and Ulitmate Festival Guide for there reviews, I kid you not! Now since currently a lot of folks out there have a musical boner for Ace again let’s go back in time shall we and take a little look see at that solo  release of his from 1978 that a lot of fans from the Army consider his (and perhaps) Kiss’ greatest work.

For me personally, I say since this falls under the Kiss empire of 1978, this is one record I can listen front to back still in the year of 2014. What I mean is I loved Kiss and still follow em( There latest Monster was a strong record) years ago for every Love Gun there was a Than She Kissed Me,For every Detroit Rock City there was Beth, For every Save Your Love there was I Was Made For Loving You.For every Uh All Night well there was a bit of filler on that album(Asylum). See my pattern on each of those albums I mentioned (Love Gun,Destroyer,Asylum and Dynasty) was for me( personally my opinion only folks) always a track i wasn’t into . Some albums of there’s were very solid(Creatures Of The Night,Revenge,Rock N Roll Over) I guess as Kiss was sometimes cranking out 2-3 albums a year they should be forgiven right?! Like I could do better!

Ok everybody climb aboard and let’s go for a Rocket Ride……

RIP IT OUT-Ace comes out of the gates firing on all cylinders with a stormer of a track! When I was 11 I heard this song and it blew my little grade school mind. The spaceman sings, plays guitar, writes the songs, produces, does everything but the drums(Anton Fig) holy crap my little 11 yr old mind is gonna blow!!! Anton rips on this track along with Aces solo!

SPEEDING BACK TO MY BABY- hahaha what do fast cars, illicit  drugs washed done with alcohol produce? A dude racing back to his baby at the speed of sound. By track two Ace is flying the songs are cranking and he pulls off of one my favourite solos of his ever..a Sonic Boom is overheard!

SNOWBLIND- Weather forecast update…..cloudy with a ton of snow on tap! This is the Space Man singing about something he knows about and it ain’t the weather kids! Cool song, Aces vocals are sounding well spaced out and also the song kicks Into overdrive during the solo I guess Ace was trying to get around that weather watch! Hail the Space Man!

OZONE-after Ace cleans off the dashboard of his car from all that snow(shoulda kept the windows up)  he trips Into another dimension and basically it’s a song about Gettin high and it’s ok to feel high n dry cause well the Ace man likes to fly. Super cool verse and than the song shifts into a Sabbathy Ooooooozoooooone…that’s the thing about this record Ace says it’s ok to get high and why would we stop him!

WHATS ON YOUR MIND- holy crap Ace chugs this song along with Antons drums and Ace is concerned about his woman! In other words Ace says “hey baby,I have no mind! So what’s on your mind?”. Ace mixes a cool blend of acoustic and electric on this track.

NEW YORK GROOVE- the single…cool song and a cover version as well but if I never looked at the credits I woulda never known. Ace makes this his own tune and one song that a lot of folk associate with him. Ace is back ….back in the New York Groove! Plus when I seen Kiss live back in 79 Ace played his cool light bulby guitar during this tune. Ace was just downright cool.

I’M IN NEED OF LOVE-Ace steps it up on this tune. It’s a total cool groover of a track that chugs down  the Anton Fig line and him and Ace collide at the solo and it goes from cool to ultra cool! Aces vocal are wickedly good for this selection of material.

WIPED OUT- Anton blazes the path at the beginning of song and Ace throws out a Wiped Out vocally and were off back into party mode after a three  track hiatus! Pass the party treats Ace it’s 3 am and it’s time to wake up the stiffs that are lazing around on the couch eating there Doritos ! Cool use of rhythm guitar in this track sounds 70s ish but hey this is from the 70s!

FRACTURED MIRROR- Ace says it’s 7:30 am everyone pick up your crap, collect those empties and go home. The party is officially over. Nice Little quiet musical with the use of acoustic featured. Ace my friend you done well.

IN CONCLUSION- Folks…Ace stepped up and nailed it out of the park! I mean the guy back in 78 was a caged animal creatively speaking and than he unleashed this awesome album that for me was far superior than the three other guys that he was employed with. Ace made a classic rock album that appealed to everyone and still does. I mean Ace cooks up a real cool batch of tunes and look at the next Kiss album that followed the solo albums ( Dynasty) Ace thru down a cool cover of the Stones 2000 Man along with his two originals Hard Times and  Save Your Love which could have been on this solo release . Dude may have been Wiped Out but he was in control(somewhat)….

You Can’t Be King Of The World If You’re SLAVE TO THE GRIND….

June 22 1992/Skid Row/Killer Dwarfs

Wowzers,Skid Row just a year earlier score a 1 album in the US of A and there playing Tbay as part of there Canadian Tour? I think this may have something to do with Sebastian Bach as I recall reading in a old music magazine from TO called M.E.A.T Magazine that Bach said he’s played all over the world and he’s not going home til he plays Thunder Bay!…hahahaha…

So the show was originally scheduled on June 15th but I guess Bach was sick so they pushed the show a week later. Give em credit they could have blown us off big time and just trucked through. Me and my brother Todd zipped to the Gardens and we went down to the floor and for a pretty good view of the stage . Up first was TO’s own Killer Dwarfs plugging there Method To Madness release. These guys were pretty cool with Russ the lead singer doing handstands, summersaults while not missing a beat. Some of the tracks like Hard Luck Town,Dirty Weapons,Stand Tall,Keep The Spirit Alive and others were played good band. Kept me and my brother amused to say the least!

Well now Skid Row is coming on and there intro music is the Beastie Boys Fight For Your Right To Party and you could here Sebastion chirping to the crowd over the song. You could hear him not see him(he was still backstage). One of his best comments was along the lines of ” c’mon you lazy ass motherf#%kers from  Thunder Bay wake up” hey Baz you know Tbay crowds all to well!

And kaboom, well no kaboom word on the street was there was no pyro allowed(local Fire Marshall ) but man they came out in hyper drive with Slave To The Grind complete with a pretty big stage set and lighting rig and these Skid Row guys were wired up to say the least. From there onto Big Guns,Here I Am,Makin A Mess,18&Life,Piece Of Me these guys weren’t letting up hey how about Psycho Therapy,Psycho Love, Mudkicker,Monkey Business( with Sebastian being bad assed and lighting a little Mary Jane in front of the crowd do that nowadays in front of a crowd, people would be like MEH!),party favourite Get The Fuck Out…and they improvised a bit when they looked at each other as too what to to play now which ended being a bit of God Of Thunder by KISS and Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult….they ended the show with I Remember You followed by of course Youth Gone Wild!

Too bad this band went into the tank in all aspects,of course they put out Subhuman Race 3 yrs later not to many cared, than Baz was booted or quit so another lead singer gone and Skid Row got some other guy and now they play clubs!? Hey man good on em for continuing on,I have absolutely zero interest in Skid Row nowadays whatever but I tell ya I give em respect for showing up to Tbay back when they could have easily like I said earlier just cruised by…..

Check out the two vids above….Slave To The Grind this live version is how I remember them here in Tbay(minus the pyro) ..umm these dudes are like I said earlIer WIRED!

Mudkicker the next vid is just a plain out awesome song as a matter of fact I still can listen to it today as it’s not a cheeseball kinda tune..listen to the lyrics man….in other words don’t take and eat crap from anyone in society especially the suits….

SONIC WAVES…..Rolling Stones/Still Life

This review is for Aaron at Keeps Me Alive ….and also after I wrote this I pushed the Publish key instead of the edit key..hahahaha(Rookie)….so enjoy the bonus review friends!

Still Life came out in 1982( a year  after the Tattoo You tour of which this was recorded) but I did not hear it until at least  spring of 1983 due to who knows why? I had bought Tattoo You  but that was it. Now you may be asking yourself how the hell would Deke nail down a time of year let alone a time of year 31 years ago, well it’s simple Sherlock, I was playing outdoor soccer for my high school at the time (Lakeview) and I used to get a ride to the games from a friend. His older brother had a cassette copy of Still Life in his car. Buddy played it and I wàs hooked ….holy crap the Stones put out a bootleg..hahaha..probably not but it sure sounded live and raw! Even all these years late I still love this album of the Stones. For further listening check out the Live Hampton 1981 show for a full version of the concert. This is the Stones for Gods sake, live and more live. Sure now they put a live album like every year with all the bells and whistles. Still Life is a stripped down Stones just them and Stu(rip) and a couple of horns. The way I like em!

Lets see what Mick an Keef were rolling back in 1981

UNDER MY THUMB-Ladies and Gentlemen( says the announcer) The Rolling Stones!!!!! and were off Mick working the crowd,Keith & Ronnie laying down the guitars while Charlie & Bill hold down the fort. This is the Stones off to a rocking good time.

LETS SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER-Mick the ringleader welcomes everyone to the show and too everyone at home watching on tv, drinking a few beers and smoking a few joints! Mick you are a bad ass brother.

SHATTERED -is a great Stones track, kinda like Mick telling us about American life, the dream so to,speak and you could end up Shattered and splattered in the streets of NYC!

TWENTY FLIGHT ROCK- this is one minute 30 seconds of boogie woogie Stones at there best..included is one of the sleaziest, sloppiest solos of all time that only Ronnie and Keef could pull off and sound cool…..What!!! the songs done???

GOING TO A GO-GO- was the single/video from this. It’s Mick creeping around the bars. I was always surprised that they went with this one, than again it’s the Stones…they do what they want!

LET ME GO-is from the album Emotional Rescue. Cool that there putting songs on this live release that you normally wouldn’t think of. Gotta respect it. It’s a typical little firecracker of a song.

TIME IS ON MY SIDE- so the Stones are gonna slow it down well they gotta you know, dig back in the vaults to keep the die hards happy at the concert in other words it’s like going to see Aerosmith nowadays and if your a lifelong fan you wanna hear Rats In The Cellar, not that Armageddon drivel ! Here’s to you……

JUST MY IMAGINATION- cool song, just let your imagination run away ,run away…..neat use of the sax in this and good ol Charlie plows it along on the drums……

START ME UP- Keef kicks it off with a riff that everyone has heard a million times but it’s still cool  even 33 yrs later. And when I think of of the Tatoo You release I think of this track and Little T&A…my two faves and oh yeah toss in Black Limousine as well……

STAR SPANGLED BANNER- and the band exits the show, counts there cash while Hendrixs version of the Star Spangled plays out….

IN CONCLUSION- back in 83 my Stones collection consisted of Tattoo You and a 45 of a Emotional Rescue(save me Mick!) but once I heard this …I had to get it especially at a time when lots of bands in the early 80s weren’t putting out live product for domestic release. Smart business man those ol Geezers were……

The video is Little T&A from the Tattoo You tour….now it’s not on Still Life(shoulda been) but it’s Keith singing hahahaha…..love it! For further listening check out the live Hampton 81 show…..it’s the full meal deal ..great live album……

SONIC WAVES…Hanoi Rocks/Two Steps From The Move

Hanoi Rocks will probably for me anyways go down in rock history as the band that got robbed of well fame and fortune. ( I’m not gonna go into details as everyone knows the deal) still though I was in grade 11 and here’s  this band that looks like well a heavy metal fashion disaster but I tell ya what’s inside on this 10 song LP is one of the,if not best sleazy street rock master pieces of our time! So after getting pumped on Hanoi and buying the record and seeing there Up Around The Bend Video on MuchMusic .Two months later…Boom, Razzle the drummer dies….Bam….Hanoi’s career evaporates into a puff of smoke!

But hey 30 yrs later this album still sounds current and vibrant….so thanks Mike,Sami,Andy,Nasty and Razzle(RIP)….

Like they say Saigon Shocks….Hanoi Rocks…..

UP AROUND THE BEND- Is the CCR track …cool cover version first time I seen the video for this I was like the lead singer looks like a chick but he has some cool gruff in his voice. Now having said that, for me personally for a first track on an album this is the weakest song . That just goes to show you how strong the original material on this was!

HIGH SCHOOL-So Mike(singer ) teaches us about the birds and bees of teaching a classroom filled with girls..the song starts with a quick riff and Razzle(drummer) just let’s it rip on the skins. The production on this album is mint.CBS hired Bob Ezrin to produce it. Imagine Ezrin going from producing  Kiss’ The Elder tracks like Just A Boy/World Without Heroes to Hanoi singing about a bunch of horny 17 yr girls learning the abc’s of life….

I CANT GET IT- This is Hanoi’s frustration on not getting it,like the Girls, rolls, private jet ,dirty blonde and red corvettes, wife, kids, house and pets…This is Hanoi at its finest catchy verse/pre Chorus/Chorus …listen to the link above. One of my fav tracks by Hanoi ….

UNDERWATER WORLD-ahhh Hanoi branches out with this  song they sing about welcoming you to the Under World…could it be sumthin in the sea? Na I doubt it. It has tons of coolness to it. Different vibe to the rest of the tracks on Two Steps but it works never the less….

DONT YOU EVER LEAVE ME-Is the power ballad tune on here. I think the way the music climate was back than this song would have been huge if Razzle hadn’t gotten into that car. The  guitar solo at the end as well as lead vocal in this tune are awesome. Michael gives er!

MILLION MILES AWAY- Is that there women are a million miles away….Michael plays a wicked sax solo in this tune(you  didn’t know that I bet right?) and then the song kicks into a whole different rhythm  like If Duran Duran was on  crack down in RIO.

BOULEVARD OF BROKEN DREAMS- Is a song about someone being strung out but it’s a very catchy number. Tons of cool percussion on this, plus the solos ..it’s all good…

BOILER-If this song was redone nowadays (2014) it would be called Cougar! It’s a very catchy track with a real sense of humour. Good on those Hanoi boys just wanting to have fun and hang out with some Boilers back in 1984! Crank the video posted below…..

FUTURAMA- Seeking fame and fortune..a pretty quick snappy Little number…brief and to the point!

CUTTING CORNERS- Is another one of my favs the band just rips it up in an old Aerosmithy kind of way. Love Mike Monroe’s vocal delivery in this song . Hanoi is basically telling me back than to  get thru life you have to cut corners…Jesus I’m glad I had direction from Hanoi back in 84! Thanks guys….

WARNING-Total Dud free recording!

Two Steps sits pretty somewhere in the bottom half of my all time top 10 album favs! Everything about this one just rocks but in a different way. Andy McCoy the guitar player and main songwriter knew how to craft some real cool street rock and he had the lead singer in Micheal Monroe to deliver it….me and TBone played the crap out of this album and after some drinks one of us will or perhaps with Tbones brothers Darr and Rugg all will occasionally recite  the I CANT GET IT LYRICS…..

SONIC WAVES…John Mellencamp /Whenever We Wanted

For me during the 80s Mellencamp was hit or miss with the material and records. Basically I can take the guys stuff from  his albums and make one good long Greatest Hits set catered to me! Now if you love Johnny that’s cool too I’m not knocking him it’s just some stuff I just wasn’t into that was until he unleashed the Get A Leg Up single a little ways before the release of the album. The first time I heard Get A Leg Up I was like whoah Johnny has tripped over a Marshall amp and decided to rock it up in 1991. From that day on (release date was Oct/8/1991…haha my birthday) to now this is the one album of his I can listen to front to back. Whenever We  Wanted is a fantastic rock album…..

Let’s check on LiL Bastard shall we,

LOVE AND HAPPINESS-holy crap drums and some heavy fuzzy guitar joined by bass kick off the party! John kicks in with his singing and I’m like ok he’s still tormented in his songs about relationships but shit he’s got his model super wife on the cover of Whenever We Wanted. How tormented are ya John?

NOW,MORE THAN EVER- man the two guitarists collide at the beginning of this song this is ridiculous,John has said F#*k it I’m making a rock record!  Deke says holy shit!  Basically Mellencamp has kicked the Scarecrow and the fiddle to the curb….good riddance sez I…

GET A LEG UP-the leadoff single that got me hooked, lined and sinkered! What a cool track..Mellencamp just takes what seems like his take on sumthin the Stones would write  and rocks it….

LAST CHANCE-It’s a song that still kicks along and does fit on this album…kinda reminds me of a cranked up Chris Issak tune(remember him?) kinda like if Johnny was cruising down some street and seen Chris Issak standing at a street corner strumming an acoustic , Mellencamp would butt out his smoke grab Issaks acoustic smash the shit out of it and hand him an electric guitar with a Marshall….yeah too make a long story short…

CRAZY ONES-John musta been listening to the Stones as this is another track that reeks Mick an Keef.

THEY’RE SO TOUGH- some cool cowbell on this guitar driven track, actually there’s a lot of cowbell on this album! John is just telling us that life doesn’t have to be this way, I think it’s a song about the record company as they begged for this album….

MELTING POT- the riff sounds like sumthin from the Tragically Hip, a latter-day Hip record! Cool riff and drums along with a cool Chrous…

WHENEVER WE WANTED- the title track,a slow burner that builds, the bass stands out on this track and real horns! ….just an awesome song….Mr Mellencamp I will refer to you from now on….

AGAIN TONIGHT- more cowbell and this was a single as well..pretty damn catchy song. Man this album clocks in at under 40 minutes…John don’t let this album end..ahhh god damn it ….

IN CONCLUSION- this album is a little ass kicker! It’s Johnny kicking out the jams! I still love this album ….just straight ahead rock album. Some may say it was the climate change that Mellencamp conceded too I say who gives a shit!  A great rock n roll record bottom line! Like i stated earlier John beat up the Scarecrow and smashed the fiddle for this record!

A music fan trying to put it down in words….
