Rainbow/Rising(1976)

Man what an awesome Cover! If that doesn’t make a musical statement nothing will!

My Rainbow listening habits started around the time of Rainbow’s 1982 release Straight Between The Eyes. I basically skipped the whole Ronnie James Dio (RIP)period(my bad) until just recently as this album was on iTunes for $3.98 so it was an easy peasey purchase!

Tarot Woman is a whopper of an opening. Tony Carey opens the album with a 1 minute 40 second keyboard intro. Hows that for laying down some Moog Law? The late great Cozy Powell slams the drums into gear while the rest of the chaps Jimmy Bain(RIP) and Mr Happy Rainbow Himself Ritchie Blackmore provide the sonic sizzle while Dio sings the tale of the Tarot Woman.  Blackmore does his deal with the devil during the solo while Powell is lurking int he background slamming the skins!

Run With The Wolf begins with all hands on deck. The band shifts a slower gear but make no mistake this song is still heavy in a Deep Purple like stomp of yesteryear. Not surprising considering Ritchie had a huge hand in those Purple songs. Dig the almost like slide guitar action during the solo. Great tune.

Speaking of Purple Starstruck  begins like a Purple track(You can hear how much Ritchie had a hand in those old Purple tunes). A real cool groove that chugs down Blackmore avenue and say what you want but the real deal on these tunes is Cozy Powell who is all over the place rhythmically and basically lets Richie loose in his rock caboose to do the stuff that the man in black can do on guitar!

Ritchie takes over and opens the song Do You Close Your Eyes and this is an all out Rainbow jam played at a loud volume! Dio drops down a ton of cool lyrics on this album. I guess you could say that this would be as close to a rock radio track you could get from these guys back in 76….

Powell drops down one of the coolest opening drum fills ever at the beginning of Stargazer. 12 seconds of a drum brilliance and Rainbow  will take you through the stratosphere of time changes  and what nots as only they can for oh lets say 8 minutes and 20 seconds! This song is a bonafide classic. It grabs you by the back of the neck and doesn’t let you go through sweeping musical climates yet never dulling out it just goes and goes and before you know it Stargazer is done! Hard to believe its 8 minutes plus…. On the way out of the door say hello to the Wizard will ya!

How about another 8 minute opus! A Light In The Black fits the bill perfectly and it rockets right out of the gate. Dio and crew play this song at a ferocious clip! I betcha once Powell/Bain/Cary hook up and  start rolling Blackmore goes all batty on his guitar for a good 5 minutes of this track! No ending in site for this song as the band is firing on all four’s.

It’s safe to say that if I was a little older back in 76 i would have been all over this album. It’s all here for the taking! You got Dio scripting all the lyrics to Blackmore’s pedal to the metal riffs. Powell slams the drum kit into smithereens  while Bain and Cary (with his keyboards adding not subtracting from Ritchie) add colours to the Rainbow! (ha that was sappy) Ok how about a boot in the ass! Crazy how it took me 41 years to own this!

Blackmore for a while leaves Deep Purple in the rearview mirror and forges a new identity known as Rainbow!

Great album!

Kiss/Rock N Roll Over(1976)

Since It’s Halloween Today …Ummmm  How About Another KISS Review….???

Gonna try to keep this one short but when it comes to my fav KISS studio albums my TOP 3 would look like this..

1-Alive…..2-Rock N Roll Over….3-Creatures Of The Night..

Yeah I know Kiss Alive is a Live album(cough/cough) but we all know the deal as it was tweaked merciless in the studio but on any day of the week if we’re actually talking about studio albums I could flip between Number 2 and 3 all the time….

Starchild/Demon/Space Ace & Petey The Cat belt out some decent Kiss N Roll….

The Song’s…

1. “I Want You” Paul Stanley  3:04
2. “Take Me” Stanley, Sean Delaney  2:56
3. “Calling Dr. Love” Gene Simmons  3:44
4. “Ladies Room” Simmons  3:27
5. “Baby Driver” Peter Criss, Stan Penridge  3:40
6. “Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em” Simmons  3:47
7. “Mr. Speed” Stanley, Delaney  3:18
8. “See You in Your Dreams” Simmons  2:34
9. “Hard Luck Woman” Stanley  3:34
10. “Makin’ Love” Stanley, Delaney  3:14
Total length:
33:18

Ah Man… I miss those under 34 minute albums and Rock N Roll Over delivers as Kiss teams up with producer Eddie Kramer and everyone roll’s up there sleeves and get down to it…

Stanley shows up with 5 tracks the best being Mr Speed that has a real cool like opening Riff and even though it’s a rock track it’s got a different vibe than say Take Me which is your typical Stanley straight ahead Goofy lyric rock track but on those day’s when its Goofy Time Take Me fill’s a void as it’s a Crash Course  in C#*K Rock.

$immon$ throws his 4 cents in with 4 pretty good rock tracks and he’s no ballad Guy well maybe the lyrics to Dr Love are about as close to a ballad as you could find but nice use of the cowbell on this track and Gene’s other tracks Ladies Room/Love Em Leave Em/See You In Your Dreams are just your simple straight ahead Chick Tracks! Not Rocket Science here Folk’s but catchy never the less!

The most interesting  track here has to be Hard Luck Woman written by Stanley but sung by Peter Criss who sounds like Rod Stewart and this is a well crafted rock track with nice acoustic playing with Criss’ drums propelling the Kiss Ship forward.

Speaking of Criss. He even gets his own tune here.  Baby Driver which is an ok track but still to elbow something on here with the Gene and Paul show calling the shot’s is saying something unlike Ace Frehley who did not contribute anything song wise but still plays some real good lead guitar on Rock N Roll Over….

Black Sabbath/Technical Ecstasy (1976)

Interesting turn of events at Camp Sabbath as when Technical Ecstasy is released the production has changed. Gone is the wicked warmness audio of the first 6 albums replaced on Techinical Ecstasy a more kind of  sterile studio sound. Everything even the songs are a different kinda Sabbath. Still though what do you do in Sabbaths case? Do you keep doing  what you’re doing and people will call you out as your not changing it up (musically) or do you in fact change it up and people will still bust your chops about changing. This record for me is Sabbath in no man’s land. Trying to move forward yet still trying to keep the crack of the door a little open on there past!

Tony Iommi,Geezer Butler,Ozzy and Bill Ward recorded this in Miami! Say no more as I’m sure there was a wee bit of partying going on at Sabbath HQs and they probably realized at one point “Ummm we gotta get a album done!”

BACK STREET KIDS-Iommi nails a heavy riff and the fella’s as they always do join in. Think Hearts Barracuda  pace not that this sounds like it  just the tempo! BackStreet Kids is a great song except that Ozzys vocals are mixed trebly like and perhaps that due to the sound of the album in whole but especially this song. Ozzy sings the tale of being in a rock n roll band going from nothing to something. The middle point of the song has a good ol synth a roo making a cameo which sounds once again Who Quadraphonia like. BackStreet Kids gets the album off to a rocking start!

YOU WON’T CHANGE ME-Sabbath is right changing gears. You Won’t Change Me is almost a slowish tune that weaves in and out with different time changes.

ITS ALLRIGHT-Bill Ward does the lead vocal here and he’s got a pretty decent voice. Sabbath is getting technical here! Not resting on their past success. It’s Allright is a no frills track! Pretty decent actually.

GYPSY-Ward kicks off Gypsy with his drums and cymbals smashing around and Gypsy ramps Sabbath back up. But wait a minute this tune almost sounds like a mini rock opera as the song shifts gears slows down and brings a mid temp pace along with some keys. Gypsy is a real interesting track. A bit of it sounds like Sabbath and a bit doesn’t! Give these guys credit there baked from the sun recording in Miami and there still shaking things up! This is a great song! I posted the video so check out Miami Sabbath!

ALL MOVING PARTS(STAND STILL)-Love Iommi’s riff n roll on this song and hey there’s a creepy 70s synth seeping in the background. Nice pace by the boys here. You know Sabbath took on a ton of heat for this record but seriously these songs are good it’s funny even Sabbath disses some of this stuff!

ROCK N ROLL DOCTOR- Junkie Sabbath looking for a fix! The lyrics say it all. “If You Wanna Feel Groovy,Give The Doctor A Call,Doctor Rock Will Help You Anytime At All!” Hey readers! That’s the deal of this tune almost a throw together good time tune and that’s Miami talking I believe. Even dig the honky Tonk piano throughout the tune as well. Happy High Sabbath just wanting a good time!

SHE’S GONE-I guess the song Changes kinda affected Ozzy and Crew as they were trying to write chick songs at times succeeding and others sometimes falling short. Too be honest this one falls short I mean the stuff I think of Sabbath is heavy doom and gloom. You can’t blame Sabbath as they’re trying to channel their inner self through song! Whoah that’s deep! Ha!

DIRTY WOMAN-Wow! Sabbath ends their album with the 8 minute plus Dirty Woman workout! Basically tells the tale of Ozz wondering around looking to score and picking up a  Dirty Woman she don’t mess a round.(could be about Hook or Smack) Iommi,Butler and Ward pull out all the stops how about some big drums, loud guitars and pumping bass changing the song structure up and before you know back to all Sab hands on deck for a heavy metal workout with Bill smashing his double bass drums at a ferocious clip!

Techinical Ecstasy by all accounts is a pretty good album. I know for many out there it boils down to the first 4 Sabbath albums and fair enough. Some and from what I read  the critics bashed this one and the next one(Never Say Die) but as I pointed out earlier people sometimes have a hard time accepting change and perhaps these songs aren’t classics but for myself there pretty good especially if the production angle  could have used  had a little more liveness to it….

Never Say Die coming up on Freaky Friday….

ACCA DACCA WEEK….AC/DC/Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap

June of 1981,myself Tbone,Chico and a bunch of other cronies from my Grade 8 class are all wandering the streets of Toronto. For me and Tbone we were hitting record shops and Whoah what’s this!! A new AC/DC album? Well yes and no! Yes it’s a new AC/DC album. A new album for me and Tbone and let me tell Ya people were snapping this album up like crazy(loved that everyone’s eyes even in the inside sleeve were blacked out!) and as a bunch of 14 year olds at the time we were like a bunch of hooligans rummaging through all these record stores!

But Dirty Deeds was a 5-year-old album( it was released in other countries except for North America in 1976) once AC/DC hit pay dirt in 1980 with Back In Black the suits were drooling over the prospect of keeping the cash flow rolling in 1981 with anything AC/DC related! Hence the release of Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap!

For a casual rock fan they musta been confused when you hear Bons vocals and only a year earlier you hear Brian Johnson laying done some serious  high vocalage on Back In Black. But for us buying everything in site in regards to ACDC we knew the deal…..

JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAILLL BRAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!

DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP-love the opening sinister riff courtesy of Angus and Malcolm with Phil Rudds drums and Mark Evans bass keeping the bottom end sounding Evvvvvvil! Love the rawness of this tune actually the whole album for that fact! Bon really steps up his lyrics on this record. Dirty Deeds gets the party going with obligatory Angus rifffage solo and Bon throwing down some one liners in the form of  ‘Cynadide,High Voltage,TNT ..” Atta boy Bon the business man name dropping the other AC/DC records available at the time of Dirty Deeds release (1976) Must give some bonus points for Angus or whoever it is yellin AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH at the end!

LOVE AT FIRST FEEL- love the opening of this song Boom with a little kick of some kind of feedback and we’re off! I always dug AC/DC’s backing vocals and this album delivers that street brawl vibe in them! Angus and Mal are locked n loaded on guitar and Phil and Mark keep, the party going! Bon does Bon man..great lyrics…. The driving bopping bass keeps this number  hopping. Crank the video attached!

BIG BALLS- hahaha….just think you’re a 14-year-old boy and you buy this album and there’s a song on it called Big Balls! This song is a classic and I wonder why AC/DC never pushed this song huge as a single man it’s so friggin catchy. Angus plays that sleazy opening riff and Bon rambles aloud about Ballroom Dancing! Well kinda of….the song title aside is Reaaaaal Good! Cool beat, great vocals, real classy cleverly written lyrics and my fav is the Gang backing vocals at the end chanting “BALLSUCKER BALLSUCKER BALLSUCKER” hahahaha love it!……I posted this song so you all can sing BALLSUCKER BALLSUCKER BALLSUCKER!

ROCKER-once the beer bottles and fists start flying out comes Angus riffing like a looney tune and Bon and company keeping up with Bon like he does with many a tune writes the lyrics to his lifestyle! This is him ‘wheeler, dealer, wicked woman stealer, cruiser, bruiser Rock N Roller Man” this song is like Chuck Berry on speed! Driving bass and drums that smash your brains in and a couple of quick boots to the noggin courtesy of Bon!

PROBLEM CHILD- ok like I just said Bon writes lyrics like he’s lived them and this is no exception! Holy hell you want street fighter mode Bon? It’s all here in the lyrics! Now I remember years ago back in high school when AC/DC was huuuuge and we had a discussion about the opening of this song we all thought Bon said “Fuck This”…but he actually says “Cop This” ha witty Bon fooling a bunch of young hooligans(us) with his phrasing. Problem Child is a mean shit kicker of a track. Angus drives the riff off the tracks and Bon throws down some more great lines “every night,streetlight..I drink my booze, some run some fight I win they lose!” Bam…Poetry in motion!

THERES GONNA BE SOME ROCKIN-just a jamming good time straight ahead feel good tune! Gonna be some rocking at the show tonight! It’s like the fellas just  plugged straight into there Marshalls and Bon slammed back some Gin and hit the mic and viola instant tune! Just head to the smoke damnit!

AINT NO FUN WAITING AROUND TO BE A MILLIONAIRE- Bon writes what he’s living and this is the dream in 1976 for him! He ain’t waiting…this is almost a 7 minute AC/DC song that just riffs along and before you know it’s done and that’s due to Bons lyrics and the band driving along the tempo and keeping  the ship rock steady. Love at the beginning of the track he throws down the old disclaimer of “only the names have been changed to protect the guilty” Wowzers Bon this shit is getting real! The song keeps plowing forward and jives up at the end when Bon sez ” Hey! Hello Howard? How Ya Doin? My Next Door Neighbour! Oh Yeah….Get Your Fuckin Jumbo Jet Off My Airport”

RIDE ON-slow animal this song is! More Bon Livin. This is slow blues rock Dacca! Phils drums keep the song going at a decent mid level clip. Bons drivin and drifting along as he’s Gonna Ride On! The backing vocals are chill! The pace is chill and Angus throws down a real chill solo that adds to the tune! Great song that if you recall got a second lease of life on the Who Made Who (Maximum Overdrive soundtrack album from 1986)

SQUEALER- what would a AC/DC album be without a low down dirty sleazy kind of tune? Umm nope not here! Squealer takes the album to its ends. Meaning end of album and end of party!  “Said she never been balled before, and I don’t think she’ll ball no more. I fixed her good!” Sings Bon as he takes along on his journey with a  (Insert cool backing vocals )SQUEALER….! Crank the video ….say no more!

IN CONCLUSION- Dirty Deeds in 2015 simplifies the word Classic! Classic sound, off the wall lead singer, wild crazy antics of dude wearing shorts ripping around short burst of ammo shots off of the fretboard of his Gibson SG guitar all harnessed in by Malcolm,Mark and Phil!  Whew….Dirty Deeds is a great record! This record is Street! As in hard rocking and of that don’t fit, help yourself to a fistful of a Bon Knucke Sandwhich!

When myself and Tbone caught Aerosmith live many moons ago there intro music was Given The Dog A Bone. When Aero finished there show that night there outro music was Big Balls….

Aero knows the deal!

Cool Lil Numbers…Paul McCartney & Wings/Venus & Mars/RockShow/Jet

So when Beatle Paul announced his first tour in 13 years back in 1989 I was stoked! Macca announces a Toronto Ontario date for Dec 6 of that year and I’m as good as there see review here.
https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2014/10/12/holy-its-beatle-paul/

I’m kinda getting ahead here but before i made the trek to T.O I picked up his live album from his Tour of 1976 the double live cd of Wings Over America and to this day I’m still blown away by it!

You want Beatles hits! Check! You want Wings hits! Check! You want just a amazing listen from start to finish! Check! Check! And more Check!

Speaking of the start of Wings Over America is the great opener ….

Venus & Mars/Rock Show/Jet …

Three great tracks all rolled into one McCartney Fatty of  Rock. I just dig how Paul just starts the tune off real chill with a bit of Arena Rock Synth, some guitar and his real super duper cool rock voice! Venus and Mars is welcoming us to the show

Red Lights Green lights Strawberry Wine A good friend of mine follows the stars Venus and Mars are Allright tonight…

Than Boom Paul and his backing band consisting of wifey Linda (RIP),Guitarist Denny Laine,Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch(RIP) and drum dude Joe English slam the tune into overdrive and we’re headed into the actual RockShow!

I have always loved Macca’s bass playing especially on the Wings stuff and RockShow is no difference. Paulie riffs up and down the bass and drives the song along with Joe the Drummer! They propel this song and Jimmy(with some real cool slide guitar) and Denny(double neck geetar)add there little touches of finesse to it! Throw in some Oi’s for good measure! Ummm I call this a bonafide Classic at Arena Rock!

Mac doesn’t ease off the gas and Wings and the backing dudes actually playing brass crank right  into Jet and we blast off and if your a fan of anything Paul Ya know this track! Jet is one of his best and man it’s pretty impressive when this track is in the opening  3 song medley! You know the dudes catalog is deep with tunes!

So sit back, make some popcorn and check out the 9 minute vid on RockShow done old school in the 1976 kinda way!
