SONIC WAVES …KISS/ Alive 2

image imageJust pics no  video as everybody and there dog has heard Kiss/ Alive 2 right!? Also since we’re talking about it how about a review of a different sorts so to speak as this was my first ever KISS record in early 1979!

I’m gonna talk about this one just as how I remember it! Let’s head back into the Time Machine!

KISS growing up in the 70s was huge! They were in all kinds of print press like Circus and Creem and even teenybopper magazines like 16 magazine. So of course a pal of mine whose name was John Young had the KISS Originals(first three Kiss studio records packaged as a triple set) and when I seen the cover of the Originals I drooled! Holy hell who are these 4 Kabuki like warriors with the makeup!

So two years after its initial release (1977) boom Kiss Alive 2 enters the hallowed halls of *** Hodder Ave/Tbay  (my home for many a years) and Wowzers here’s Kiss Alive 2 ….I’m skipping a few tracks but hey you will get the just of it!

DETROIT ROCK CITY-Some Kiss guy announces ‘You wanted the best …..” We all know the rest right and we’re off and there’s the crowd roaring and the opening riff of Detroit Rock City and man the crowd is jacked I mean the audio of it. To this day when I listen to it I find the crowd too much if it’s even a Kiss crowd or the supposed sample Super Bowl 77 crowd! Who knows and well I see what Kiss is doing there making it seem bigger and better and were louder than all you other acts out there! For me at age 11 going on 12 …it friggin worked.

KING OF THE NIGHTIME WORLD is launched and the Kiss Live chops (is it live ?) well for me at the time  they sound live and I’m blown away. Holy geez are Ace/Paul pulling down some dual leads at the end of this tune! Yeah they are…..

LADIES ROOM- ok next to Creatures Of The Night I would have to say this is Simmons best sung record and its a live one to boot!(so they say) I mean check out the top left pick of Simmons where he has all that  blood and shit spewing out of his trap! Man he’s a mess! But being 12! Umm. Mom can I sleep tonight with the light on after looking at that pic!

CALLING DR LOVE-Kiss sounds like they know what there doing on this track! Better yet Peter Criss pulls out the cowbell and also by the time I got around to getting the  studio albums its evidently clear that these live versions are played at zip speed compared to the studio offerings! Party stimulants abound I’m sure on that Kiss Alive 2 Tour of 1977!

SHOCK ME- My fav Kiss guy Space Ace Frehley loads up (literally ) and blasts off with his lead vocal and guitar solo on Shock Me ! It’s a great track and a bunch of mish mashing notes make up his guitar solo and of course the guitar is smoking during it !

HARD LUCK WOMAN &  TOMORROW & TONIGHT- were I guess recorded in the studio and than the live crowd was slapped down in the background  so Kiss could fill up the live portion of the album without repeating tracks that were on the first Kiss Alive  from 2 years earlier! I wonder what went thru Simmons and Stanley’s heads at the time when they did this stunt! Yeah I know and you know what went through there heads, the answer was….$$$$$$$$$$$$ and more $$$$$$$$!

I STOLE YOUR LOVE-was this not the tour opener for This tour? Except for Alive 2 it’s the opening song on Side 3 ! Good straight ahead rocker track!

BETH- so Petey the cat man gets his limelight complete with prerecorded symphony and Its his time to shine while Gene And Paul count the $$$$ backstage and Ace well I dunno …….

GOD OF THUNDER-Demon Gene the lord of the wasteland slams foreword on this Sabbathey? sounding track complete with Peter Criss drum solo and I thought this was the greatest drum solo until I heard Neal Peart 2.5 years later(1981) totally mash his drum set on his solo on YYZ! Anyways Criss does his deal and were headed to the finish line with …

SHOUT IT OUT LOUD- Gene and Paul want us to all Shout it Out Loud! You gotta have a party! This song we have all heard and the live portion album ends with Kiss Loves You Goodnight!

So Kiss decides hey we got 15 minutes on side 4 lets get the yaya’s out so to speak and each guy does a tune well except Criss cuz well listen to his solo album from 1978 this will explain to you the listener why there are no studio tracks of his on Alive 2!

AMERICAN MAN- Paulie struts his self and tells us he is the Amerian Man! Ummm is this really Kiss playing on this? You know they should have scrapped the solo records and done it this way …wait a minute they should have done a double album of new studio material with one record (sides 1&2)being material for Stanley/Simmons and gulp Criss! Where as sides 3&4 would have been Aces solo record which to me is one of the best studio Kiss records ever!

LARGER THAN LIFE- it’s Simmons and its not a bad tune! Heard better (Radioactive) heard worse(his whole Asshole solo album) it’s Gene circa 77 ego included!

ROCKET RIDE- yeah man and this is why Ace is my fav Kiss guy until he split in 1982! He just steams out this track I mean does it get any better in the Frehley Hall Of Fame with lyrics like ‘ baby wants it fast baby wants a blast she wants a Rocket Ride!” Plus his solo is so skiderish its cool! Ace in 77 you were the deal!

ANY WAY YOU WANT IT-cover tune and Stanley and crew rock it up but yeah its a cover!

IN CONCLUSION -rewind like i said to early 79 and this is the shit for a kid whose 11! Kiss layed to down the law with a gimmick and it royally paid off till the public got sick of Kiss and there deal in the early 80s! Except for me i still littered Gene and Paul’s pockets with dollars not cents!

ACCA DACCA WEEK…AC/DC/Let There Be Rock (Australian Version)

Muc was the first guy that I knew of that owned Let There Be Rock. At the time when  I heard Let There Be Rock for the first time (early 1981) Back In Black was raging supreme in sales so when I sauntered over to Mucs house that cold Jan day and kicked the snow from my boots ….there it was ….

LET THERE BE ROCK….

The cover said it all. I mean who needs a million words when one pic will do and that’s the cover of Let There Be Rock! Band on stage in action with a ray of light from the heavens shining down on them! Ok that sounds corny! But look at the pic for the two vids posted! See! Cool huh? AC/DC there  heads down and getting to work….no fuckin around! This is the cover we got in Canada. Now the Australian version had a different cover and that’s the pic of Angus Youngs guitar neck with the title Let There Be Rock written underneath. And like the good blog boy I am I included the one song that is on the Aussie version and not the Canadian version! You have to keep reading to find out what the mystery track is! Hahaha….. Gotta love hype?

The back cover as well has a full pic of Angus! Wowzers man this blew me away as I knew even back than that Angus was the focal point but a whole pic of him on the back cover. Ahhh why not it’s about self promotion and I guess that’s what the suits were doing!

GO DOWN- 1,2 …da bam bam..da bam bam..that’s AC/DC laying down some serious riffage off the top and what a great opener! Bon the rock poet name drops Ruby Ruby and Mary Mary and something about lickin a stick! Hahahaha….the guitars courtesy of Angus and Malcolm drive the lyrics written by Bon and Frigg what a classic opener! Just what I like those Gang like backing vocals singing GO DOWN…GO DOWN…yeah man you are gonna get your ass kicked!

DOG EAT DOG-“Well it’s a dog eat dog …eat cat too! Frenchy eat frog and I eat you!” What a great opener of a line and man the DC Express is loaded and leaving the station! Love the beat to this tune. Phil pounds the drums with Mark Evans playing straight bass and keeping the Express on the tracks!  Angus nails down a ripping solo as soon as Bon yelps “Woof” and  man this is a fantastic one two punch of a start with Go Down and Dog Eat Dog!

LET THERE BE ROCK-ok so I posted The vid for this song and this is the cover we got here in Canada! See the light shining down..hahaha…(yeah I know Shaddup DeKEs get on with it! )Phil smacks his snare drum and we’re off with Angus riffing and rolling and Bon drinking and Snortin and I’m like….WTF!! This is heavy devy hard blues rock ! Love the verses just kick back with Bons voice,Marks bass and Phil(Mr Jailbreak) on drums and when Angus and Malcolm join the party all bets  are off ! Angus plays a bunch of Chuck Berry riffs at 120 clicks and this song just flat out rocks! It does not get any heavier in the sense of hard blues rock than Let There Be Rock! Let There Be Light….Drums..Guitars….Arrrrrrrgh ….Let There Be Rooooooooock!

BAD BOY BOOGIE-Angus and Phil lead the pack with the charge of drums and guitar and here comes Bon leading the pack with a fists a flying and doing the Bad Boy Boogie all over town! Great song just a straight ahead rocker but you would expect that from these guys right?! Angus and his solos on this record are like lightening bolts of brilliance. These guys were going for the throat and they grabbed my throat and wouldn’t let go!

OVERDOSE-always loved the opening to Overdose! Angus and Mal sound like there trying to figure out the chords! Ha…and boom the song kicks in and shifts  into gear! Sounds like Bon was overdosing on women here man. Thats the great thing about Bons lyrics, the way he wrote them you know he lived them! One of the best lyricists ever!

CRABSODY IN BLUE- heres the mystery track! One that was left of the Canadian version of Let There Be Rock( we got Problem Child)  Folks, how many of you have heard this tune? Well here at Arena Rock I posted the vid it lists the song as Overdose but it’s Crabsody…..I’m not gonna say anymore about this track! Just listen to it and drop some comments on what you think of it.

HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE-smashing cymbals, loud guitars and Bon saying “Hey You!” and we’re going to Hell with the Angus and Malcolm blazing a trail with there guitar chops! Love the tightness of the guitars in the Verses and the chorus ramps up with Bon leading the charge with “Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be!” The solo like all Angus solos just flat out rocks!

WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE-42-39-56….you could say she’s got it all sez Bon! When I think of this song I think of the live version on If You Want Blood You Got It when in between the song starts and ramps up you can hear the audience chanting Angus! Well JackLoaf we argued with him back in highschool as JackLoaf thought the crowd was saying “”ROCK US!!” Hahaaha…we chastised him for months in school over this flub! Ha….Rosie though since 77 has been a staple forever and a day since than! Great song, cool lyrics, great beat, awesome solo and Bon laying waste in the night and than theres Rosie!

IN CONCLUSION-Wowzers man Back In Black was the first AC/DC record I heard back In 1980 where I learned the birds and bees about (Ahem) life! Now if I had heard Let There Be Rock first this would have been the one. Bon with his lyrics tells me all about the Dog Eat Dog world out there! How to do the Bad Boy Boogie while Overdosing  on some lady who goes by the name of Rosie! It’s all here kids!

Crank this one if you got it…if not just buy the friggin thing!

Let There Be Rock Muc!

SONIC WAVES…HEART/Little Queen

This is a Vinyl Request from daHeff…he says Kick it out!

It must have been late 1979 early 80 or so and I was ripping through my pal  John Youngs records and he had Kiss,Pink Floyd,Cheap Trick and Wowzers whats this John? Two good looking women hanging out in the forest looking like a couple of rocker Maidens!  WOWZERS man who are these mystery women ?

Up Til that point for me It was rock guys I mean I had no idea until that day that women rocked! Yeah I knew of Donna Summer(Rip) and Olivia Newton John but geesh that was about it!

Smart tactical selling ploy! You put the two good looking girls on the cover(Ann and Nancy Wilson) and you put the 4 long haired rocker guys In the background (Micheal Derosiers,Steve Fossen,Roger Fisher and Howard Leese)

This album is still a classic today and well good call Heff and thanks John Young…..

BARRACUDA- if you have not heard this track ummmm I officially pronounce you sonically  brain dead! I mean this is quite the opening riff and hey not only is Nancy a good looking girl she kicks the guitars ass along with Howie and Rog! Micheals drums sound like Zep to me on this  track big fucking sound and you need it pal cause here comes down sister Ann and she drops the vocals and holy hell I’m floored! This is a rock chic singing hard rock and back in 1980 or so I found love! Hahahaha….what a stormer of a track!

LOVE ALIVE-Ann and Nancy tell everyone to chill out and out comes the acoustic, harps and flute? Ok John Young now what? We go from the riff Rock heavy of one Barracuda into Ummm folk rock? This kinda stuff confused back in time and it didn’t take much but throw down some flute on a 13 year old boy at the time (me!) and I’m confused! Now of course as I’m pushing 50 I get it a little more this is Heart being classic rock but they didn’t know it back than! Speaking of the flute I should have been aware as Kiss themselves would dabble with the flute on The Elder!(1981)

SYLVAN SONG- is a little two minute stop gap featuring mandolins between Love Alive and  the next track which is…

DREAM OF THE ARCHER- holy heck now medival Prog Rock is happening and Frigg John Young your expanding my musical senses here. The Archer is a 5 minute track prodding and plodding throught out the rock forest! Umm  holy shit I’m lost in this track as the sisters and dudes of Heart can play many forms of rock and were only 4 songs in!

KICK IT OUT- Nancy Cranks her Marshall amp along with Roger Fisher and boom here’s the drums and man the hi hat is loosey goosey sounding and this track is one of my faves! What a great chorus and man oh man Ann lays it down vocally and this song is tighter than Nancy’s spandex in the What About Love Video! The song is a ass kicker! Kick It Out! Love the buildup and speed of it……great Ol riff a Rolla! Crank the video posted kids!

LITTLE QUEEN- the title track and check out the vid posted! The song weaves thru all kinds of rock settings! Power chords, chill chords,Ann singing,Nancy laying down the acoustic 6 string! Looking back on this album man it’s crazy how much of music trendsetters Heart were. Take away there mid to late 80s fluff  and really go with this stuff!

TREAT ME WELL-Nancy takes the lead vocal on this track and proves that not is she only a great guitar player but she can sing as well!

SAY HELLO-is another slower mover of a track! Not one of my favs but still Heart had to do what they had to do.

CRY TO ME-is the second side rock slow mover tune. It’s a ballad and well I can handle Heart doing this especially back than (1977) as ballads didn’t become what they became until some of those 80s Hairball Acts would jsut do it for the $$$$$

GO ON AND CRY-end of the album Slow chill heavy kinda rocker! Heart jams it out TIL the end! Name me another Rock album where the last two tunes have the word Cry in them? Go ahead? Is there? Hahahaha heck if I know! This tune builds slow and its amazing to see how much of a influence Zeppelin had on Heart.

IN CONCLUSION-John Young whenever I would check out his records years ago would always have SUMTHIN new stashed in the mix of the usual recording suspects! This time it was Heart and this is a release I appreciate more now than at its time. Side One of Little Queen is a little more rockier whereas side two a little more out there in regards to material(slower paced). For me though at the time it’s like “John!!! Where’s the Rockers?!” Ha! Guess you could say John was more adaptable at changing up the musical horizons for oneself at  a young age  as I was still hanging outside The Ladies Room with Kiss!
