Deep Purple/Infinite(2017)

Mikey Ladano has to be the biggest Deep Purple Fanboy I have ever known. The dude loves his Purple so when this album dropped in early April of this year I knew Mikey in his review would give Purple’s latest Infinite a fair shake!

Mikey raved on about it even reviewing a couple of the singles before the actual album dropped! He was invested in this album Huge. I commented that the track Time For Bedlam was pretty good. But to be fair I thought I would wait for Mikey’s review of the whole Purple Meal Deal of Infinite to see if i would purchase it myself!

When the album was finally released Mikey reviewed it and raved about it so I took the plunge a few days later and purchased it myself!

Before I go any further I like the cover of that Ice Freighter carving it’s way thorough the Ice and making the DP Logo. Very bright looking!

Actually this is my first Deep Purple purchase of a new studio since 1996’s Perpendicular which featured Guitarist Steve Morse making his Purple studio debut replacing everyone’s favourite Loose Cannon Man In Black Ritchie Blackmore.

I guess you could say I was long overdue to hop aboard the Purple Tour Bus and give it another go!

Boy…Am I glad I ever did!

“Time For Bedlam”
“Hip Boots”
“All I Got Is You”
“One Night In Vegas”
“Get Me Outta Here”
“The Surprising”
“Johnny’s Band”
“On Top Of The World”
“Birds Of Prey”
“Roadhouse Blues”

Ian Gillian/Ian Paice/Don Airey/Steve Morse/Roger Glover along with producer Bob Ezrin(Alice Cooper/KISS/Pink Floyd/Hanoi Rocks) have put out a real fine piece of Hard Rock that delves into the sound of there 70’s past but have also made it sound modern as well basically a mashup of the 70’s and 80’s with an added touch of keeping it current!

Time For Bedlam begins with a Gillian like chant almost hypnotized if I say so myself and before long the boys in the band fire up behind him and this is a good straight ahead rock track. Guitarist Steve Morse and Keyboardist Don Airey lock in together and Ezrin does a great job at keeping the mix of the guitar and keyboard from not overpowering the other. The chorus here is the money shot! Great opener! Must also mention the one line Ian sings which is ‘Sucking my milk from the venomous tit of the state’  Is Tbone writing lyrics for Deep Purple?

So we delve back into the time capsule and put our Hip Boots on and this is a swampy like Purple N Jam tune. Love the lyrics to this one.

You can bury me up to my knees in shit
Or anything else… I don’t mind a bit
You think I’m gonna drown but you’re wrong
‘Cos man I got my hip boots on

Hip Boots just sounds like a total Jam tune as I had mentioned and I just love the laziness feel good vibe it projects….

Purple open All I Got Is You with that eery creepy like Hammond Keyboard Sound that we have heard for years but don’t be fooled as the song picks up the Paice(ha) and propels the song forward with tons of Morse and Airey Guitar/Keyboard mashing up throughout this song and the album as a whole!

One Night In Vegas is a great song with a ton of fun like Gillian lyrics where basically he was  snapped up on drink in Las Vegas met a girl went to the chapel had no recollection of this happening and they are still together 30 years later! True story? Dunno but a great tune with some nice riffing by Morse.

Drummer Ian Paice’s drums sound awesome at the beginning of Get Me Out Of Here.  Ezrin once again let’s the boys get to it and this is one of those tunes that has a decent pace to it with the keys and bassist Roger Glover producing a huge wall of sound but make no mistake when I’m listening to this album I don’t think of it as I’m hearing a bunch of old guys playing rock. No sir! I’m thinking it’s a bunch of old guys creating new Rock!

The Surprising leads off with some real cool 6 string picking courtesy of Mr Morse. This song  eases of the Purple Gas Pedal a bit but Paice and his drums keep the song moving forward. Hey,I have no squabbles about slow songs but I hate slow like mush tunes like many act’s get sucked into but as long as the drummer fella keeps the beat moving  forward.  I have no problems whatsoever!

Now here’s a cool tune called Johnny’s Band. A song that is written about a dude named Johnny and the fella’s in his band which would be Bill/Pete and Benny, Johnny’s Band in the lyrics of this song hit the top than hit the skids(like so many do!) but Johnny keeps given ‘er even though he’s playing the clubs. Cool interplay between Steve on guitar and the vocals of Gillian on the chorus!

On Top Of The World has a pretty cool groove to it and thats because Airey knows how to add space to let Morse soar on these songs on guitar.

Time for a psychedelic like stomping tune that’s called   Birds Of Prey. This song is out there, kinda trippy but  enough oomph to not make it a wimpy  waste of space. This track has Ian and the boys out there to  and heading into infinity and beyond. Basically loading up and going Space Truckin!

Roadhouse Blues. Yup this is The Doors cover from decades back and you know what! I love this cover of it. Tons of harmonica/tons of guitar and tons of musical swagger shown in Roadhouse Blues. Here’s a little tip for you folk’s out there reading this…’Yeah, keep your eyes on the road, your hand upon the wheel!”

The iTunes version I purchased has 4 added bonus tunes.  Paradise Bar/Uncommon Man/Hip Boots(demo)/Strange Kind Of Woman(live)

What a great record in the year 2017 from The Deep Purple Fella’s! It’s cool to see a band with about 50 years of history being able to cook up a batch of great rock tracks.

Steve Morse totally rules on this album as he plays flawlessly not overdoing it with a whole bunch of  wanker fest wang bar diddle daddle look at me soloing! Nope! Than again Morse has never been that kind of 6 stringer! Everything about this album is solid…Songs/Musicianship/Singing/Production. It’s all here!

This album is worth the dough folks!

Deep Purple/Perfect Strangers Live (1984)

UnknownBack in 2013 Deep Purple finally and I mean finally released a live document from their 1984 Perfect Strangers Tour! Perfect Stranger’s the studio album is one of my all time favs! There is not a dud track on that studio album as the Purple Boys set aside their differences and smashed out a classic that still resonates today with many!

Perfect Strangers Live Tracklist:

01. Highway Star
02. Nobody’s Home
03. Strange Kind Of Woman
04. A Gypsy’s Kiss
05. Perfect Strangers
06. Under The Gun
07. Knocking At Your Back Door
08. Lazy (including Ian Paice drum solo)
09. Child In Time
10. Difficult To Cure
11. Jon Lord Keyboard Solo
12. Space Truckin’ (with Ritchie Blackmore guitar solo)
13. Black Night
14. Speed King
15. Smoke On The Water

How’s that for a set list?

I will say that the first 7 tracks are awesome as there’s a  mix of old Purple and a great mix from Perfect Strangers (studio album). Considering it was the start of the tour (in Australia) the song’s come across real good and better yet when there are glitches like singer Ian Gillian sounding a little hoarse at times not doing his patented wails. That’s alright as it’s 100% Live!

Ritchie Blackmore is a man possessed on this album. He has to be the King of Live Improvisation as his end of the song soloing is off the rails especially on tracks like Gypsy’s Kiss and Under The Gun. Blackmore lifts off here Folk’s! Speaking of which Gypsy’s Kiss I posted a clip of and Just watch at the end….He’s on a whole other planet! Ritchie man ..hahaha….whoever was his Guitar Tech back than should write a book about the Man In Black!

Course with Purple you get the expected solos. Drummer Ian Paice. Keyboardist Jon Lord(RIP) and of course Ritchie all get there moments in the spotlight. Bassist Roger Glover during the songs keeps it all together with his straight ahead bass lines.

Purple take a stab at Ritchie’s old band Rainbow’s tune Difficult To Cure which I guess Ritchie probably demanded as Purple could have easily done any song in the catalogue but I guess what Ritchie wanted Ritchie got in keeping a happy ship for at least a few years anyways!

This another Warts N All Live Album….what you hear is what you get!

Great Buy!

T-Bones Top 20 Albums Of All Time(2016 Edition)

TBones Sacred Top 20....
TBones Sacred Top 20….

This past Saturday(April 14/16)  Stick It In Your Ear reader Jon (who runs his own fantastic website which you should check out here by clicking the link and reading about everything Rock!)

https://etainmentnewsreviews.wordpress.com/

posted on his FaceBook Page his Top 20 which Jon also said you could have easily done a Top 40 Fav Album List! True That!

Jon had some real cool albums such as Whitesnake(Slide It In) Y&T (Meanstreak) Motley Crue(Shout At The Devil) and KISS Alive amongst others!

It got me thinking about my Top 20 (a few months ago we did a Top 15  list with fellow WordPress Bloggers which was a ton of fun to see people’s tastes in music and books etc). So via Jon’s page I clicked the link and voila right to the page to enter my Top 20!

It was easy to do and entered in my Top 20. So I linked it right to Facebook went my list and first order of business was issuing a bit of a fun challenge to others as what your favourite 20 albums would be!  Only could  be studio releases(no live albums) and one album per artist as I would have loaded up on VH, old Aero, old Kiss,Maiden,AC /DC and that would have been it….hahaha…No Cheatin!

Tbone(whom I have known for 4 Decades!) right away came through in the clutch as he posted right away  his list ( T’s list is at the top of the page) and it was great to compare! A buddy of mind Tony also posted his Top 20 but he broke the rules with  as Tbone typed  “19 Anvil compilations and High N Dry don’t count!” Hahaha….Seriously though thanks for participating  Tony and how about a  shout out to Blackie Lawless!

My Top 20 you can see posted just below……

Screen Shot 2016-05-15 at 3.32.42 PM

It’s cool to see and compare lists with Tbone….I thought a post about Tbones Top 20 along with my usual smart ass comments would be a fun thing to talk about ….Shall we…?!

We are on the same page with The Cults Electric and Guns N Destruction albums and it’s kinda cool to see that back in the year that both of these albums were released (1987) myself and Tbone turned 20 years young and that Guns had opened up for The Cult on the Electric Tour! Yup groundbreaking info here! Hahaha…..

Of course Rush would be there as Tbone tossed in Moving Pictures which was basically our introduction to Rush that year of 1981 when we started at Lakeview High School and quickly learned that Rush had played at our very own School back in 1973!

I was very surprised and glad to see Maidens Number Of The Beast (1982)on there! Ha….Tbones parents  at the time probably thought he was gonna burn down a church after they could hear the  Air Raid Sirens wails of “6-6-6 The One For You And Me!” resonating from his bedroom. I’m sure his parents were relieved when they heard Bryan Adams Reckless(1984) which itself is  a solid pick T!  It is indeed an all time slab of great  CanRock that even to this day does not sound dated! Another great call is Tom Pettys solo album Full Moon Fever and its 40 minutes of an Ass Kicker Album!

Speaking of Maiden a few sentences back I went with Seventh Son Of  A Seventh Son! Moonchild is one of the best opening tracks on any Maiden album….EVER!

I take full Blame and responsibility on Tbone hoping aboard the HALEN Tour Bus Sonically that is and it didn’t surprise me in the least to see Fair Warning (1981) on his list! I mean any of those first 6 Dave Roth Albums could easily be in The Top 20 no problem! Speaking of Roth.  Bam! Here comes Eat Em And Smile (1986 ) and with that kick ass musical combo Dave had behind him(Vai,Sheehan,Bisonette and Tuggle) we spent many an hour chatting up songs like Bump And Grind,Big Trouble and Elephant Gun and wishing we were Dave(1980s Dave that is)….Another great pick T!

U2 with Achtung Baby we both could have  had on our list easily and perhaps I should  have as well but man Bono annoys me …..Achtung though what a brilliant album and along with the production angle of Lanois/Eno is so groundbreaking and to this day  to my ears is still one of the best sounding studio albums! Not as good as Rick Rubin’s produced Cult  Electric Album mind you but Achtung holds it own..

Great call on ZZ Tops Eliminator Tbone! Man how could I miss that one? I could have easily bumped out Cheap Tricks Dream Police for that  It goes without saying  that Tbone dug deep into this list and pulled out some Gems! After which Tbone drank deep into his Scotch! Haha…

Safe to say Standing Hampton(1981) by Sammy Hagar   is the Ultimate Shock A Roo! What a fantastic add! I just about spilled or was it spit out my coffee at that pick… Like I said earlier T did his homework and stepped up! Course this album features Heavy Metal and One Way To Rock but how about I’ll Fall In Love Again and Baby’s On Fire….easy peasy pickins! It’s a great album as it has a good sound as Sam I Am hadn’t fallen Into those 80s trappings of whiney  synths!

Nice to see Tbone select Stone Temple Pilots (1994) as well here with the Purple album and this was when we saw STP open for The Stones in Toronto on the Stones Voodoo Lounge Tour! Not to be outdone I selected Superunknown(1994) by Soundgarden! Man I love Cornell’s voice! Limo Wreck is a classic ! The Stones both made our lists with Tbone selecting Sticky Fingers and me going with Some Girls! Another band match was Zep with Tbone tossing down Zep 4 and Ol DeKEs dialing up Physical Graffiti!

Tbone rolling with Aerosmiths  Toys In The Attic and myself choosing Rocks are actually no brainers as it proves without a doubt that me and Tbone like our Aero slopped up  when Steve n Joe were loaded up on party treats (special mention must be given to Done With Mirrors) and wrote real cool songs before they became that AeroSap Band doing soundtracks and wanting to become something they weren’t ….

Another Shock A Roo pick from T would be Mr Books favourite band Sloan with Navy Blues! How can you go wrong with She Says What She Means,Izzy and Angus and the classic DC stolen riff of Money City Maniacs! Exactly you can’t! Did not see this one coming as well but a real good pick!

I went with another Canadian Band and that’s The Tragically Hip with Road Apples (1991) actually any of their first four  albums I could have picked! I love Road Apples as it reeks Canadiana, smells of Weed  and Cold Canadian Beer! ” You Just Hit Me Where It Hurts,I Guess It Felt Quite Primitive!” Bellows lead singer Gord Downie during Twist My Arm! Great track!

Bon Jovi with New Jersey(1988) made Tbones cut and fair enough as it was a strong album (the tour for it was a real good show)and still holds up well by today’s standard! Too bad Jon has currently disintegrated  a once great act into a big pile of Music Poop!

Tbone sneaks In Collective Soul’s (1985) self titled second album which  is a great rock record. Ross Childress plays some real supped up leads while Ed Roland is a talented singer songwriter! My only knock are the drums sound programmed but still great songs especially the opener “Simple!”

Before I let you all get back to reality(thanks for reading)  how could we not talk about AC/DC pre Axl Rose era! T says Highway To Hell(1979). DeKEs says Flick Of The Switch(1983)Can’t go wrong with either! Tons of salty lyrics (Rising Power and Beating Around The Bush) Lotsa Angus! What more do you need?

Def Leppard  with its mega zillion selling album Hysteria (1987)  made TBones Grade while I prefer the hard rock stylings of High N Dry(1981). Both are classics and like I have said in every Lep review I have done that once Steve Clark died lots of creativity in the riff department went to heaven with him…..

Holeeeee Shatz! This kinda went on but it was fun to go down memory lane sonically with my pal of 40+ years! (WHUT?) Thanks for reading and well….

As you were!

DeKEs All Time Top 15 (Kinda,Sorta)

So Aaron at the KMA wanted us all to toss down in print  our Top 15 albums of all time! I will link later today  some other Blogger Gals And Guys Top 15s as well so you can click their name and cruise their site! All worthy reads if you ask me!

There are no rules for doing this. Just list your albums! Myself I had to make rules as in I would have loaded my Top 15 with just Iron Maiden and Van Halen! Ha…..

For myself personally I had to make rules. I dated the album the year was from ….

So it’s only one  album per artist, just studio albums,no live albums or Greatest Hits(Blah) are allowed……. You can Search these artists as I  have reviewed 11 of these albums . Not saying which ones I haven’t!

So here it be Folks….read, comment, ummmmmm Rock!

Top 15 ….

1-Van Halen/Women And Childern First(1980)

2-Aerosmith/Rocks(1976)

3-Iron Maiden/ Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son(1988)

4-AC/DC/Flick Of The Switch(1983)

5-Guns N Roses/Appetite For Destruction(1987)

6-Rush/Signals(1982)

7-Led Zeppelin/ Physical Graffiti (1975)

8-Def Leppard/High N Dry(1981)

9-The Cult/Electric(1987)

10-Judas Priest/Screaming For Vengeance(1982)

11-Kiss/Rock N Roll Over(1976)( TIE) Motley Crüe/Too Fast For Love (1981)

12-Deep Purple/Perfect Strangers(1984)

13-Hanoi Rocks/Two Steps From The Move(1984)*

14-SoundGarden/Superunknown (1994)

15-Rolling Stones/Some Girls(1978)/ (TIE) Police/Synchronicity(1983)

Some Neanderthal Findings from this list include….

My mind is basically frozen from the 1980s with 10(plus 2 Ties) of my selections from that decade!

4 albums from the 70s….(Zep ,Stones,Kiss And Aero)

1 album from the 90s(Soundgarden)

IN CONCLUSION- No Surprises Really….I’m A One Trick Musical Pony!

Some of you may go for instance is DeKEs high? He’s saying Flick Of The  Switch is better than Back In Black in regards to AC/DC! Yes everyone and their dog loves Back In Black myself included but for some reason the rawness the down n dirty of Flick was right up my alley when Flick was released in 1983 when i was about to turn 16! It’s just where my noggin was pointed in that direction back in time! Next week i could flip any DACCA album into the 4 spot like Powerage,Highway To Hell,Back In Black…..yeah man just Fill Your Head With Rock!

*The music selection is Cutting Corners by Hanoi Rocks! Easy peasy selection in  my book as out of this whole list of bands Hanoi had the least success but as we all know they were about to break huge but….. Cutting Corners is the last song on Two Steps From The Move and it’s such a great friggin track! It goes to show you with it being the last song just how strong the whole album was! Check It Out!

FYI- I came oh so close to having U2’s Achtung Baby on this list its bounced around my top 15 as it’s a fantastic sonically, produced well written record  etc but I bumped it out for the reason that U2 2015 bores the piss Outta me…..sorry Bono! Ha like Ya Care!

Pickin LeBrain’s….Deep Purple/Perfect Strangers

Allright! So if you remember from Monday’s post I mention the fact that Richie Blackmore and Roger Glover had shut down Rainbow and had reformed Deep Purple with Ian Gillian,Jon Lord(RIP) and Ian Paice.

Perfect Strangers the album was the masterpiece that resulted from this reactaviated group and I can honestly say today that this album is so wickedly good ….well let me tell Ya all about it!

1984 and the magazines like Metallion and Music Express here in Canada as well as Circus and Hit Parader south of the border(USA) were running adds on the soon to be released Perfect Strangers album.

Like any good 17 year old male at the time I bought into the hype! Boy am I ever glad I did! …

Smoke On The Water….Fire ……Bad!

KNOCKING AT YOUR BACK DOOR-Jon Lord begins the festivities with his Hammond B3 and you hear almost like violin sounds in the background and as it gets louder here comes Paice and his drums and Boom were off! Lord drives the Purple Bus on this track and its a great driving keyboard line! Glover nails down the bass and here’s Richie doing what Richie does best! Weaving in and out and mixing it up with Lords keys and Ian Gillian throws down some real awesomely good vocals and some wily Ol coyote sexual innuendo in the lines like “the log was in my pocket, when Lucy met the rocket” and “sweet Nancy was so fancy to get caught in her pantry!” Blackmore tosses down a solo that sounds like he’s inebriated but it works like a Gem!  The band wrap up the mid section of the song and solos and rock  it out one last time before Ian kicks Nancy and Lucy to the curb!  Knockin is 7 minutes and 9 seconds of a hard rockers delight! Cunning Linguist! Watch the live video! It’s the deal….a great version and Ian Paice has the coolest mutton chops In Rock(that’s for you HMO!)

UNDER THE GUN-Purple flies out of the gate with a bang as all 4 dudes are locked n loaded and here’s Ian singing it. Under The Gun is a great track! Lord it even sounds like he taps into some 80s synth in this tune but don’t worry keyaholics there’s still a ton of Hammond B3 to spread around! The middle part of this tune is real good as it breakdowns into some Purple Like Polka and Richie ramps up on all cylinders and shreds his strat at the end of this tune! Drums are rolling  and smashing along. Under The Gun just plain out rocks!

NOBODYS HOME-Paice nails down some cowbell and the Purple lads once again aren’t fooling around! This song starts off with a blistering pace and the music in this tune just plain flows with some neat little riffing between all the players. The chorus just rocks and Blackmore is in his element in Purple! Flinging out leads like no ones business and if you ? his  business! He’ll punch In the face!

MEANSTREAK-the band including Ian rock right out of the gate with this straight ahead rock track propelled by Glovers Bass and the real cool smooth chorus about a Black Mamba and something bitter sweet! Yeah man another bonafide Classic and like I just said Black Mamba!

PERFECT STRANGERS-Another super duper Lord opener with the bad ass B3! Perfect Strangers is one of Deep Peeps best tracks! Gillian I love it when he sings chill like this song! The verses, chorus everything is just simply awesome! I love before the solo Lord goes Yonkers on his keyboard and throws down some Zep Kashmir stomps before Richie yet again sandblasts his Strat into orbit! Perfect Strangers= Perfect Song! Crank the video!

GYPSYS KISS-Richie starts off this barn burner with some neat little little pickings and than whoosh everyone is jacked and it’s full throttle ahead and Purple 84 proves without a doubt that they can push the pedal to the metal when duty calls! Well, why don’t ya crank the video my friends that I posted and right after the keyboard/guitar fest sing those classic Gillian lines..”John Wayne,The Alamo,Crazy Horse Geronamo,I’ll Smoke A Piece With You” Atta boy Ian sharing the peace pipe!

WASTED SUNSETS-is the slower song on here and it’s a great track. I like to call this one Musical Sunsets as it’s not your 1984ish kind of slop stink Journey balladeer! No Sir and No Mam. Wasted Sunsets is just that a bit of ooomph coming from  Mutton Chops(Paice) and he drives this tune with his drums as Glover on bass keeps it Simple Simon while Ritchie, Jon and Ian contribute there parts nicely! Well put together tune that no one ever talks about when Purple is discussed….check it out! No there is not a video posted for this track its out there so go and do your Rock homework and check back with me later!

HUNGRY DAZE-this sounds like a Deep Purple Jig! Quick snappy keyboards with snappy snare blasts from Mutton Chops and Blackmore sizzling out quick little bolts of genius! That’s Hungry Daze! Even included is the middle part of the song where they go Daze like with Paice throwing down some quick little drums rolls and boom Gillian wails and the song is over!

IN CONCLUISON- in 1983 I owned one Deep Purple album(Greatest Hits ) 1984 rolls around  and its 2 owned with Perfect Strangers and I can tell Ya all here  that this album is lodged easily in my all time top 15 records! Perhaps even the back half of the top 10! Yep so when I wrote this review it was with the knowledge that this was gonna be a great one to review !

Unfotunately though the next Purple album did not deliver(House Of The Blue Light)  in my eyes but it did feature the real good song Bad Attitude! Man if the Purps had included Bad Attitude on Perfect Strangers?? Wowzers !

Now if your looking for a ton of Purple Reviews check out MIKEYS Blog ….there you can spend hours reading all his reviews on everything Deep Purple! So the next rainy day that comes your way check out Mikes Blog….tell him DeKEs sent Ya!
