Triumph/Live At The US Festival(2003)

So  1983’s U.S Festival was a 3 day Rock Festival that had thousands upon thousands attend over Memorial Day Weekend (1983)..

Hows this for a backyard party?

I couldn’t even fathom the thought of attending this show and I remember the reviews in Circus Magazine and all you could see was people/people and more people!

Sunday, May 29 (Heavy Metal Day)

So Van Halen was the headliner of Heavy Metal Day. But take a little lookie and there’s some Can Con on the bill and pretty high up on the list is Triumph.

Not bad man as they were ahead that day of Ozzy/Judas Priest. Thats saying something! Only Klaus and the Stingers and Roth An Ensemble were ahead of Triumph on this day!

The Tunes Of Triumph….

  1. “Allied Forces” (Gil Moore, Michael Levine, Rik Emmett) – 3:41
  2. “Lay it on the Line” (Rik Emmett) – 4:30
  3. “Never Surrender” (Rik Emmett, Michael Levine, Gil Moore) – 6:37
  4. “Magic Power” (Rik Emmett, Michael Levine, Gil Moore) – 5:49
  5. “A World of Fantasy” (Rik Emmett, Michael Levine, Gil Moore, Tim Patrick) – 5:32
  6. “Rock & Roll Machine” (Gil Moore) – 10:31
  7. “When the Lights Go Down” (Gil Moore, Michael Levine, Rik Emmett) – 6:18
  8. “Fight the Good Fight” (Rik Emmett, Michael Levine, Gil Moore) – 8:07

Pretty cool as Triumph plays in the outdoors and it looks hot! Hell even Bassist Mike Levine with his cool 1983 white slacks and ball cap   fit the dress code that day.

Triumph show up folks and especially Rik Emmett who plays brilliantly as there are a ton of heavy Guitar Hitters here on this bill.  Drummer Gil Moore drives the bus with his playing and how about a view of the brilliant  tune Allied Forces!

Don’t muck with Triumph as they will kick your ass and send in the Rock Troops. Emmett though on all the tracks  plays AWESOME! I will say at the 1 minute 23 mark of the video posted  is my favourite part! Wowzers! Hopefully Mr Books doesn’t pass out!

Too bad these other bands didn’t jump on the ball and release this show especially Halen as Roth is off his rocker at this show. Missing vocal lines/rambling on/telling stories. Was it all for show! For sure and don’t you just love Halen as they flat out refused to show up unless they were paid $1 more than David Bowie who headlined on the Saturday Night! Basically Halen was making over a cool Million for one nights work! Just recently the 3 Triumph Fella’s got together with radio guy Eddie Trunk and Eddie asked the guys about what it was like backstage at the US Festival.  I think Gil or Rik said that VH had what they called The Compound backstage which was basically a huge wall from the outside that was made of bamboo!

Ok Enough ….Actually Judas Priest released there live portion from this show on the deluxe edition of the excellent Screaming For Vengeance as well! So two bands had there Shit together in releasing footage of this show….

Triumph though on this flat out rock and with 8 tracks including a crazy great Guitar solo from Emmett in Rock N Roll Machine.

Triumph Live At The U.S Festival took 20 years for a proper release but I think this may be the best Live Triumph album I have heard..

If you come across it …pick this up!

DVBeer’s Review: Triumph/Live At Sweden Rock Festival(2008)

unknown-5Welcome Friend’s To  A New Series Called  dEke’s and T’s DVBeers Review! The Mission Statement was basically to Drink Great Local Beer(Sleeping Giant Ale was the choice this night) and to watch and critique a couple of Music DVD’s…So sit back and get ready to enter the Rock N Roll Machine….

So Triumph basically hit the skids Professionally and Creatively   around late 1988 or so. Triumph played a local show in their hometown of Toronto and right after it Guitarist Rik Emmett said Adios to Drummer Gil Moore and Bassist Mike Levine.

But when the Canadian RocK N Roll Hall Of Fame in 2008 was going to induct Triumph(20 years since Emmett spoke to Moore/Levine) the olive branch was reached out and the boy’s worked out whatever they had  to work out and decided to give it a go with two shows. Sweden and Oklahoma(WHUT?) were the two spots chosen and so a few years later here comes theAudio CD/ DVD set of the Sweden show and were off!

Now to be honest with you’s out there. I used to pile up all new band releases first on VHS years ago than DVD but over the last 5-6 years everything ends up on you tube so I will buy a band’s audio release but the DVD’s I will pass on…. Still have a lot  kicking around so when I went over to Tbone’s one Friday night this past October I decided to rummage through the Rock Box and pull out some stuff that I haven’t watched in a while and to be honest and like I told T. I only watched this Triumph DVD maybe once as I ripped the audio disc to my iPod  and never looked back!

The Songs Of Triumph..

“Live At Sweden Rock Festival”
(TML Entertainment, Inc./UMG)

01. When The Lights Go Down
02. Lay It On The Line
03. Allied Forces
04. Never Surrender
05. I Live For The Weekend
06. Blinding Light Show
07. Rocky Mountain Way
08. Magic Power
09. Rock And Roll Machine
10. Fight The Good Fight

So we get a 10 pack of Triumph’s Tunes….

Check out opener When The Lights Go Down. Man ya gotta love Levine’s Cliche Rock One Liner’s towards the end of the song. Haha!

When The Lights Go Down is a great track! Always has been and always will be and Triumph is off a running and the first thing Tbone says is “Emmett and Gil look pretty good still ,but Mike Levine looked old in the 80s and still looks old now!” Bam! First shot fired! We had a good laugh and Tbone poured more Beer …. Still though it’s great to hear Triumph! Like bumping into a long-lost friend and catching up about the good ol daze!

The Boy’s mess with us as they do this jam out before launching into Lay It On The Line and once the tune hits the chorus I mention that the guitars (courtesy of Emmett and second stringer Dave Dunlop) have a crunch, a bite to them. Tbone nods in agreement! We also have a chat about how unforgettable the Sport Of Kings album was and how it torpedoed Triumph from cool rock act to AOR Fodder!

Allied Forces is an audio assault on the ears and Triumph rolls up and once again tell’s us that “Rock Troops Are On The Move”. Tbone  mentions that “Emmett always had the radio tailored voice whereas Moore had the Street Rock Type vocal” Agreed! Emmett launches off during the solo and Tbone pops a Music Boner over how  clean the appearance of Emmett’s Guitar’s look while Levine plays the same looking ragged bass the whole show….

My ear’s are blown! T pours yet more beer!

Never Surrender brings us back to 1983 when Tbone bought the vinyl copy of said album. Like I said in some of my other Triumph reviews I still never bought this album as I would steal T’s copy!

I Live For The Weekend.  Tbone added “an ZZ Top like shuffle during the verses” Yup sir you are correct and this leads to another discussion of up until about 10 years ago I only had heard this on the 8 Track of the album Progression Of Power release which Tbone owned. We laughed at just how old we are! I also tossed out that this was the tour that Triumph last played Tbay(Fall of 1980)

Want Prog Triumph? Look no further folks than Blinding Light Show. Rik straps on the White Double Neck Gibson and sings for his supper on this tune. I mentioned that this was indeed Proggy Triumph where Tbone chimed in “had to suck for Triumph coming from Toronto and always  getting compared to Rush. Like they could have come from Winnipeg and the comparison would have not been as huge” No shit …Being a three-piece and coming out of Toronto how are you not going to be compared? If Triumph came out of Houston? People would have compared the 3 piece of Triumph to ZZ Top! Ha…imagine Levine with a long ass beard? Anyways this is a classic tune and full props  and bonus points to Gil for slamming that big assed Gong behind him!

Tbone right away states “Joe Walsh must have loved these guys” and why not Rocky Mountain Way is almost a Triumph original. This is a great version and Gil once again sings a good tune and the mix of this song is Big N Beefy! Joe made a ton of dough from Royalties!

T pours another round of Suds and were past midnight and now it’s time for the Rock N Roll Machine which is another great track which features a walloping guitar solo by Emmett and the dude can play man! One of the most underappreciated players in the game if you ask me. Kinda cool how they after Rik’s solo lay off the gas pedal and slow the song down to a bluesy like crawl…..The intro’s and outro’s on these song’s are changed up to keep us guessing. Well done you old buggers!

Fight The Good Fight is on the biggie tracks here in the catalog of Triumph. TBone sums it up best “Rik always would sing about finding the positives of life” and of course we revert back to Sport Of Kings with the big single Somebody’s Out There and of course I have to mention ” Geezus if Gil comes out from behind his drum kit to sing Just One Night I’m gonna lose it!” Course this never happened but it’s fun at times to be a Jackass! Tons of Ripping guitars/Big Drums/ and ummm Mike Levine! By the way we commented at least a dozen times about the Swedish National Hockey Team Jersey Mike was sporting with Mats Sundin #13 on the back.

Live At Sweden Rock is a great add to the collection. Course they could have added more tunes (the brilliant Thunder 7 album was totally skipped) but these guys like playing 10 minute tunes so hey that’s their deal and like most live releases perhaps a tweak or 3 was done in the studio but for myself and Tbone who gives a Shit? Triumph puts out product once in a Blue Moon so us Old Schooler’s are happy!

Thanks for reading along ….

Watch down the road for future DVBeers Reviews……

SONIC WAVES…..Triumph/Thunder 7

Hard to believe that in late 1984 this would be the last real good studio Triumph record …Ummm ever!

1981  Triumph puts out the 100% Deke full endorsed Allied Forces and you can check out that article here….https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2014/09/10/sonic-waves-triumphallied-forces/

1986 Triumph puts out what is in musically speaking terms a Titanic like Musical Disaster(Sorry Probie!) that you can chuckle here about…..https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2015/02/25/34s-filler-triumphsport-of-kings/

Triumph was a real good band and when they released Thunder 7 in 1984 it was a quick purchase. Thunder 7 had a cool cover and I loved the power trio format especially in Triumph were it’s basically riding on Rik Emmett and his guitaring many styles like rock, classical and more rock! Where Gil Moore drummer boy was the co lead vocalist with Emmett as well and Mike Levine who wore hockey jerseys, played the bass and managed them as well….

Triumph always would get compared to that other trio from Toronto(Rush) and i always thought who cares there different bands man the only comparison is there from Toronto and thank god Geddy Lee didn’t have Mike Levines stache!

Rocky Mountain Triumphs Way……

SPELLBOUND- Wowzers some diddling synth sounds and boom bass drums and Emmett on guitar get the show started and we’re off.Gil lays down the lead vocal and were rocking  with a great chorus and of course Rik lays down a great solo and I’m Speeeeeeeellbound! Triumph is rocking it down …..check out the live video posted a few years later from Probies(Ha) fav Triumph album Sport Of Kings Tour where Triumph had a fourth memeber added on second guitar(Rick Santers)

ROCK OUT ROLL ON-a slow plodder of a rocker! This Is Riks tune so there’s guitar and  a slow groovey tune! Cool Rik solo and Wowzers Triumph 1984 is fine and well! Of course 2 years later in 1986 …Umm I ain’t going there!

COOL DOWN-Emmett throws down the acoustic classical style Zep like trimmings and the song does ramp up and no wonder this sounds like Zep to me Eddie Kramer  dialed this album in as producer and he produced Zeppelin so there Ya be!

FOLLOW YOUR HEART-Big Triumph single! Gil handles the vocals and with Triumph they always wrote positive lyrics! These guys weren’t bummed out well they probably were after Sport Of Kings album torpedoed Into the dumpster commercially speaking! Seriously though Follow Your Heart kicks into gear with the chorus and its a great tune! Great solo and Triumph kicks good ass on this tune!

TIME GOES BY-Now this is tune is big Triumph Prog! Rik handles the vocals and man he nails down some riffing especially during the solo where his solo reminds me if Eddie Van Halen was in a head on car crash with Angus Young! What’s even more impressive is Levine actually lays down a solid bass line and doesn’t run out of gas! The solo ends and its back to Triumph Prog! I gotta tell Ya folks that after not hearing this song for years this is classic Triumph! Basically stuff the musical bong full of riffs, airy keyboards, snappy happy Gil Drumming,Mike Levine playing keep up and ladies and gents ..EXHALE! Check out the video posted!

MIDSUMMERS DAYDREAM-Rik showboats himself on acoustic guitar! The cat was by far the real deal in Triumph. Meaning he was very important by that  I mean his riffing in the power  trio format was essential as he kinda to my eyes and ears carried the other two dudes to great heights! Like say in the my old band that i was in with Tbone! (Current River) I rode Tbones contails basically I was the Mike Levine of the Current River Band! For starters I pushed Tbone to write tunes than we had to put out our music,do shows, and oh yeah play a half ass sloppy bass and the real clincher for me was in Mike Levine fashion was i even wore a New York Rangers jersey at one of our shows! For the record though I never ever have grown a stache! I’d probably still be single today!

TIME CANON-acappella of the word …TIME ,TIME,TIME….ged it?

KILLING TIME-is one of my fav tunes from Triumph! Why you ask? Simple says I. Gil and Rik share lead vocals on this track. Why these guys never did this more often in Triumph I will never know but man Killing Time is a Great track. Kinda Boston like in the verses and I love when the chorus kicks in. Rik jacks up some power chords and we’re off! Check out the video posted to get a dose of the Rock N Roll Machine circa 1984!

STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND-Rik man he’s the king of guitar chops! This is groovey Triumph! Rik nails down the lead vocal and were off an running!

LITTLE BOY BLUES-ends Thunder 7 as a musical as in Triumph is playing  the blues not singing just playing and once again Rik shows the cool kids on guitar how to do it!

IN CONCLUSION-Thunder 7 was produced by Eddie Kramer,he of Kiss fame! Word on the street was that Eddie and Rik butted heads over the guitaring of Emmett Or something to that effect!

For me though this is a real good Triumph album. Allied Forces I would still rate higher in the Triumph catalog but never the less this is a real solid deal! Kinda funny as Riks voice was tailor made for radio play(Lay it On The Line,Magic Power,World Of Fantasy) but it’s that crazy guy Gil on drums who gets the single meal deal with the two tracks Spellbound and Follow Your Heart are the ones that the vids are done for!

Interesting …..but still 1984 and in my hood the Rock N Roll Machine is alive and well!

SONIC WAVES…..Triumph/Allied Forces

DATELINE-1981,what a fantastic year of new releases for me…let’s see Van Halen with Fair Warning,AC-DC with For Those About To Rock, Judas Priest With Point Of Entry,Rush/Moving Pictures.1981 was the year also I got Def Leppard High N Dry and also the year I became a big fan boy of Iron Maiden(even to this day, minus the Bayley years) with Killers…sure I’m missing some albums but man I could go on and on. One album that came out when I was entering grade nine( yikes)was Triumphs Allied Forces. I mean great marketing move geared to us young rockers. Think about it! Black album cover with a blue and gold Flying V on the cover. Let’s see that means one thing to me ….lots of guitar! I knew of Triumph as they played here in 1980 which was the last time they were in Thunder Bay but now it’s 1981 and there’s a ton of great music out.

I remember seeing this at the record shop once I flipped it over and seen the song titles I had to get it and all these years later I still say it’s there best work, front to back no filler…..

Let’s see what Gil/Rik/Mike have spinning in the Rock N Roll Washing Machine….

FOOL FOR YOUR LOVE- kicks off the album and after the first Chorus I’m hooked. Wow can this band play and Rik lays down some solid riffs,Gil sings lead and pounds the drums and Mike Lays down some straight ahead bottom end. I think it’s there best tune to ever lead off any Triumph album….

MAGIC POWER- ahhh some nice little keyboard action and HEY they got a second singer in Rik also doing double duty as guitar hero,as well. This was a single for them and did quite well for them. A nice little rocker especially when the solo kicks in ….

AIR RAID- oh I’m feeling sumthin brewing at Triumphs war base. Sounds like an Air Raid Siren. Hey man,Triumph was not fooling around with that title….the bomb drops, strikes and we head for cover until the (see below)

ALLIED FORCES- rock troops are on the move …..Gil and the boys are gonna save our asses! This is a tour de force and check out Rik taking his guitar playing into the next stratosphere. This song just smokes, sure the lyrics might be a little fruit loopish in 2014 but hey get behind the Triumph Tank they will blast their way out of danger!

HOT TIME(IN THIS CITY TONIGHT)is a Rik n Roll rocker basically it’s Triumph saying were showing up to your city you better lock your doors cause Mike Levine is on the loose!

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT-Rik starts  off side two with a pretty cool track and for all of you that follow Triumph if you had to throw down a top 10 Triumph list I betcha 98% of you’s would have this track on it. Once again the song builds up and Rik just takes it over in the guitar hero department.

ORDINARY MAN-is Rush hanging out with Triumph. This is concept Triumph well to my ears anyways …it’s Rik singing and telling us just cause Triumph and the rock troops destroyed your village! We are still Ordinary Men.

PETITE ÉTUDE- Rik shows us his diversity as a guitar hero..holy crap the dude can play all styles.

SAY GOODBYE- yep adios everyone Some pretty cool Hammond organ during the Chorus and Rik/Gil/Mike  finishes off the album in style…Say Goodbye…..take a bow Triumph…you earned it!

IN CONCLUSION-I bought all Triumph studio releases after ALLIED FORCES except for NEVER SURRENDER. That purchase went to TBone and as he lived behind me growing up whenever I wanted to hear Never Surrender I knew where to go so I never bothered. Allied Forces for me is classic Triumph as it just flat-out rocks. Songs/ production / vocals/musical chops….

The video is from the US Festival back 83. VH,PRIEST,SCORPIONS and others were on the bill and as you can see Rik Emmett brought his A game to hang with the big boys! Check out the crowd shots……mass people….
