Motley Crue/Girls Girls Girls (1987)

1987 and I turn 20 years young while that same year Tbone turned 30! Hahahaha…Nope he didn’t he’s just 6 months older than me but hey when opportunity Knocks you gotta kick the door in to bug your best friend!

This post on The Crue came to me when myself and Mikey Ladano were yacking about how a lot of 80s band just put out album after album tour followed by tour and sometimes the bands recorded material suffers…..

Case in point….Girls Girls Girls….

Hop aboard the Arena Rock Tour Bus as we dissect just what the hell went haywire in the Crue Camp….

Nikki Sixx(bass and main songwriter) Vince Neil(when he could  sing) Tommy Lee(drums) and Mick Mars(guitar) are the culprits  here…..

Time for another installment of 3/4s Filler and as per protocol I only toss albums that I have purchased sometimes twice over (like this one) on vinyl and later on cd so my blog, my rules! Hahaha!

Mikey Ladano did make the point over at The KMA site that most Motley Crüe albums half sucked anyways …hahahaha….and Ladano does make a pretty decent point!

For Every Crue Classic Album that I would consider top notch rock (Too Fast For Love and Motley Corabi) there are some duds(Theatre Of Pain and Girls) ….you can read about my yammerimg on Theatre Of Duds here…..https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/34s-filler-motley-crue-theatre-of-pain/

Consider the Bastard dead!  Is that  me?

WILDSIDE-Wowzers Sixx nails a grand slam right off the bat with this tune! With what Sixx is shovelling I’m digging it here! Wildside is a well written piece of LA street rock! From the opening of  Mars wang bar diddle doodle and Lee playing some hard rock cool drum beats  Sixx slams a straight ahead Cliffy Williams of ACDC fame bass line and Boom were off and running and hey Vince man sings this real good and the opening line of Wildslide is the best written opening verse by a LA Glam Rock band ever….”Kneel Down Ye Sinners To Streetwise Religion,Greeds Been Crowned The New King,Hollywood Dream Teams,Yesterday’s Trash Queens,Save The Blessings For The Final Ring,Amen…..Amen indeed! Check out the live vid posted from the Girls Girls Girls Tour! This 8 minute vid has all the trimmings of 80s Arena Rock. You want Vince dropping F Bombs and plugging the new album?  Check! You want a couple of floozie back up singers whose backing vocals are jacked up way to high too the point of hilarious? Check Check! You want a Mars guitar solo in the middle of Wildside? Triple Check! How about a huge live production with pyro, lights and screaming women? Cheque Please Waiter! Yup ,I miss 1987 hahaha…kinda!

GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS- ok let’s face it this when I was  20 this was cool. You know the background to this! Sleazy Vince tells the tales of how many bad ass stripper clubs The Crue has visited like The Body Shop and The Marble Arch! I mean the middle part where Tommy and Vince are whistling and calling each other’s names to check out the women is plain dumbo! Thought it was back in 87 and more so in 2015! So for that Blah! Poor Mick Mars by this point he has no choice to go along with the gimmick he plays some good guitar on this record but man it’s amazing you go from a deadly start with Wildside and quickly you start to meander around by track 2! Last time I went into a strip club here in Tbay was  with Tbone,Darr and Rugg and some other yahoos it was for Tbones  Stag night   we got tossed out over the fact that someone punched in some roof tiles! Yup there Ya go we’re bad ass like Sixx and company minus the blow, hookers and Tats! Ummmm I’m gotta think about this one for a sec!

DANCING ON THE GLASS-a big problem for me listening to this album is the production! Tom Werman handles the producers chair here and man the sonics sound weak and sterile! Dull I guess would be the word. Dancing On Glass i dunno Tommy pounds the drums into the ground but Dancing On Glass is really not a spectacular tune!  Just never registered with me…

BAD BOY BOOGIE-kinda like the somewhat Aero Groove here that starts the song! That’s about it. Actually Mars plays a decent solo with Sixx slobbering all over his bass and laying down a decent line(ahem!) The lyrics about getting your hands caught in the cookie jar and getting banged in the back seat of your car are just plain out goofy doofus rock 101! Wonder if Tbone got a lyric writing credit for this Hodgy Podgy piece of rock?

NONA-hey this is about Sixxs GrandMother so  it’s his band his deal and who doesn’t  love there G-Ma! (That’s what my daughters call there Grandma!) it’s all good here man all good!

FIVE YEARS DEAD-side two starts with some promise! I dig Mars and his slide guitar playing over the years I like  his style more now than I did back in the day as poor Mick was buried under a avalanche of LA Hot Shots!  Yeah this song has a neat groove and aero like shuffle ….pretty damn good….

ALL IN THE NAME OF ROCK N ROLL-Drugs,Boobs,Sex,Young Girls are on tap for this tune. Tommy smashes the drums at the beginning and Mick joins in as well Nikki plays a decent bass line but the over dubbed guitars just ruin this song I mean there a ear sore to me anyways if that means anything! Not to Sixx as he cashed his zillion dollar cheque at the bank on the sales of Girls Girls Girls …..

SUMTHIN FOR NUTHIN-Track 8 and pure genius! This is a great great song! Love the groove as it just reeks old school rock! The chorus is just plain sick! Cowbell Tommy and the band lay down a real solid song! Sumthin For Nuthin In and Out Is Never Free yodels Sleazy Vince and man I’m buying what there selling! Hahaha….like the Gang like backing vocals. Crank the video posted!

YOUR ALL I NEED-Sleazy Vince sings in a register so high that my parents probably thought i was skinning the family cat! Ha…seriously though I guess Sixx thought “we hit paydirt with Home Sweet Home” so let’s do it again. Not exactly! Guess this song is about some guy who offs his ex girlfriend  you know the deal when he doesn’t want anyone else seeing his ex! Not really PowerBallad material hahaha….like if EveryRose Has It Thorn went cuckoo is Your All I Need! I remember at the time thinking that if Journey did this kind of tune they would be locked up! Don’t Stop Believin Chop Chop!

JAILHOUSE ROCK(live)- Live? Blah? Not? This is a waste man! Poor Elvis! Let’s slap some audience on a studio track and call it live! This is brutal man..this album finished after Sumthin For Nuthin! Arena Rock Filler these last two tracks and I bought this album twice! DeKEs + Girls Girls Girls Album+$$$ Spent = Sucka!

IN CONCLUSION- Sixx Sixx Sixx and his bag of Trixx fooled a young me and you know what in my rock circles no one ever really talked about this album. What people did talk about was the live show with Lee going 360 in his drum cage and the cool looking strip club stage. That’s what people talked about and when myself and Tbone went to see the Crue on the Feelgood tour (1990)only Girls and Wildside were played and that pretty much tells the tale of said record. Even Sixx,Lee,Sleazy V and Mick M even know the deal!

I can say what I want but bands like Maiden,Leppard,Priest and Crue are firmly implanted in my DNA so i guess Sixx is having the last laugh after all ……

Maybe 3 songs I dig here 4 tunes tops! And I bought the damn thing twice??! I think I should be committed!

Gary Moore/ Run For Cover(1985)

Gary Moore (RIP)should have been huge in North America! Of course Gary laid done some brilliant guitar work in Thin  Lizzy but like many others in successful bands  he split and went solo!

It was sometime in late 1984 I first read about Belfast born Gary Moore in Metallion Magazine (RIP) as Moore was gonna be doing the Monsters Of Rock 1984 with Van Halen,Motley Crüe, Dio,Accept,AC/DC,Ozzy and Y&T! There’s some serious guitar action there! Geezus a ton of heavy hitters!

All the bands mentioned above I had on vinyl or cassette except for I had nothing by Moore! I figured what the F*^k I’ll check out something by Gary Moore as I mean here’s this guy named Gary and he’s playing on the same stage as Ed Van Halen,Angus Young,Jake E Lee,Vivian Campbell,Wolf Hoffman, Jompa’s home boy Dave Menketti so Moore must be good!

Corridors Of Power was the chosen cassette tape I bought and it took one track the first song Don’t Take Me For A Loser and man I was hooked! The dude could play guitar, sing plus for added bonus he had Neil Carter ex of UFO riding shotgun playing rhythm guitar and keys!

From there I bought the double live We Want Moore as it was released at the time (1984) that I first read about him! The opening track Murder In The Skies just flat out rocked! His guitaring on that track is soooo good and the fact that he wrote it about the Russian Jet Fighter that shot down that Korean Airliner carrying civilians proved that he wasn’t just gonna sing about party rock doofus themes all the time!

When 1985 rolls around I’m onboard right away with Run For Cover when it’s released!

Run For Cover is a great rock record! Moore embraces the rock side but pushes it’s limits at time with 1985s technology! Also interesting is that he used including himself 5 different producers and there are some decent names Like Andy Johns(Led Zeppelin) Beau Hill (Ratt) Mike Stone(Journey) and Peter Collins(Rush) ….

Gary also brought on board with him some real good musicians like Glenn Hughes  (vocals), Bob Daisley(bass) and one of Mike Ladanos favs Phil Lynott (RIP) .

So between producers and all star musicians Gary from Belfast plays a real good Strat and sings a decent tune!

Boys are indeed back in town….

RUN FOR COVER-a snazzy whirl of the keys and boom Run For Cover is just that! Gary and his Strat are ripping licks  left and right and the drums and bass are locked and Run For Cover is a great opener as its features great verses and chorus along with a real slick move by dumping the opening snazzy whirl of the synth in the middle of the song  which segues right into Moores solo and this solo is soooooo friggin good..well watch the vid! Moore kicks my ass in a cool 1985 kinda way….

REACH FOR THE SKY-Moore peels leads right off the hop at the start of this track. This is a basic rock track so basically it’s old school rock not a synth in site and Glenn Hughes delivers the bass  while Gary wails on his guitar and throws down a good rock vocal.

MILITARY MAN-Phil Lynott wrote this track as Gary and him hook up on this track. Military Man has some Military like drum rolls and sharp bursts of almost a Celtic like flavour added and of course two years later Gary really dives Into the Irish roots with Over The Hills And Far Away.  Military Man is a great track. Kinda  a Thin Lizzy reunion!

EMPTY ROOMS-this is a great slower paced tune. Moore oooozes slow riff after slow riff but not to the point of Sap! Neil Carter was Moores wingman on keys, rhythm guitar and backing vocals and is showcased on this tune as well since he co wrote it. This song did well for Moore! Case in point I heard it back in the day of our local Am watered down station 580 CKPR! Usually they were pumping Air Supply and Little River Band to give you old foggies a idea!

OUT IN THE FIELDS-Lynott returns and along with  Moore take this tune to town! Out In The Fields is a classic song about the boys growing up in Ireland and the turmoil and war going on at the time. Moore plays a great guitar on this track and this is one of the songs that embraces 80s technology but in 2015 keeps it in check! Great solo on this tune and if you want a good ass kicker version check out YouTube and search Gary Moore Out In the Fields Monsters Of Rock 2003! It’s just a Moore, some bass and guitar and a shitload of Moores fantastic playing….the vid I posted is the studio track and you can see by the lyrics written it’s none of that cat dragged in material! Great song!

NOTHING TO LOSE-Gary sets the pace with this track and it’s just another straight ahead rock track! No frills just a good rock track. Gary has some tunes that have nothing to do witht 80s technology and are just simple tunes! Great solo by Moore and the band just use the keep it simple silly  rule! Atta Boys!

ONCE IN A LIFETIME-this is a great song! Sure it has the 80s trappings of poppy kind of Keys but man it has Moore playing some good guitar and when duty calls he could write a decent track that could be played on radio. Great poppy chorus with a added touch of coolness tossed in!

ALL MESSED UP-this is a straight ahead party rock track! Gary is All Messed Up With No Place To Go! Have you been to that place? This song is  a good loud rock guitar drivin track and I’m sure it went down a storm live in concert!

LISTEN TO YOUR HEARTBEAT-Moore ramps right down and almost goes a little bluesy on this tune. Of course it was a sign of the times as 5 years later(1990) Moore ditched the Rock and went into full out blues mode with his 1990 album Still Got The Blues and scored his first ever Gold Record in the USA!  I didn’t follow Moore’s path to Bluesville but he put a ton of Blues albums and also dabbled with Rock until he died in 2011.

IN CONCLUSION- living in Tbay I could count on one hand the amount of people that I knew that listened to Moore! There loss as they missed out on some real good Rock guitar. Run For Cover is a great no frills Rock record and actually I guess with 5 producers and special guest musicians its a allstar record now that I think about it!

Moore has all kinds of  tunes on here embracing 80s technology but also staying true to the rock guitar roots of his career!

If anyone reading this comes across any of Moore’s stuff pick it up! ITunes as well has a lot of his stuff not that I’m plugging Apple but that is my method of purchase nowadays as we all know ……

SONIC WAVES….Revolution Saints/Revolution Saints

Who woulda thunk it that my first purchase of a new release from 2015 would be a band featuring a dude from Journey(Deen Castronovo) a fellow from Whitesnake(Doug Aldrich ) and a chap from one of Tbones 80s Guilty pleasures Nightranger(Jack Blades) .

One of my blog pals from Sweden Jon who writes his own great stuff at Festival and Music Guide gave these guys a 9/10 review of there debut. Too be honest  with ya’s the thought of put together bands with outside writers just wants to make me puke and I kinda alluded to this fact on Jons Facebook page.

Years past I have dabbled with supergroups and they have been a let down I mean one of the biggest musical car crashes was that Contraband band record from 1991! Remember that one on paper it looked good it had Micheal Schenker/Bobby Blotzer/Traci Guns/some chic from Vixen on bass and Richard Black a vocalist from a band called Shark Island(who were good) but man Contraband I bought and man what a pile of Vinyl Poo! Listened to It once and heaved it somewhere….Utter crapola!

Since I troll music sites daily like Blabbermouth and Bravewords I knew of Revolution Saints and seen as they were getting the press etc but I dunno I thought oh yeah here we go yada yada but Jon  said give it a try and his great review sold me on it so I preorderd it on iTunes and well …..good call Jon….this is a classic piece of well done AOR ROCK!

You Can Still Rock N America …..even if it’s 2015!

BACK ON MY TRAIL-this opener reminds me of a juiced up Nightranger track. It’s a fast rocker and well man the  question becomes apparent pretty quick why is Castronovo the Journey drummer and not the lead vocalist? My question is yeah he has some style reminiscent of Steve Perry but not a actual copycat of Perry! Who knows man but Deen has a smooth as silk AOR delivery and holy hell he can play some slick drums and of course with Jack Blades nailing down the 4 string and ok let’s talk about the guitar guy Doug Aldrich I guess he split from Whitesnake last year and he’s a great guitar player as it shows in this tune! Too be honest I guess he cowrote two Whitesnake records with Ol Dave Coverdale(Forevermore and Good To Be Bad) so the dude can hold his own but man he rips a pretty decent solo and so far track 1 is a winner !

TURN BACK TIME-Aldrich starts off with a nice opening riff and Deen and Jack share co lead vocals on this track! The other thing is if these guys ever go live there gonna have to drag a keyboard guy with them that’s for sure! Now I kinda get nauseated when I think of AOR and keyboards but these are mixed below Aldrichs guitar and for that SALUTE! This being a rock record I mean this thing is full of singles and this is another one for sure!

YOUR NOT ALONE- speaking of keys piano it is at the start of this track and well Arniel Pineda Yep the lead vocalist from Journey does the singing and I see why the record company wants to sell records so let’s bring in the current Journey vocalist! I get it I get it but man let The Saints forge there own identity and do it themselves but I don’t pay the bills so …. But seriously this is a great written track the chorus it breathes with Power chords and man Yep it’s not a balls out rocker but a good song here at Arena Rock is a good song! If this was 1990 this song woulda chugged easily into the top 10!

LOCKED OUT OF PARADISE-more straight ahead rock from The Saints! These guys Aldrich/Blades and Castronovo know the deal stick with what Ya know and it’s what they know which is there chops and the Aldrich pulls of some Van Halen Balance like playing! Love how the keyboard sounds like UFO like. Castronovo also plays some good drums on this record I mean the guy followed Steve Smith in Journey for Gods sake so he has to have it right ? Well I can say here he does! The solo is wickedly good here and man the solo and ending riff is deadly!  A  big boot of AOR up the back side!(currently my fav on here)

WAY TO THE SUN- this track features Deens boss from Journey and that’s Neil Schon. Hey and not since the fantastic Hardline Total Eclipse album of 1992 that Schon was on can I hear him rock the guitar! Geezus he still has it! Now this is the Neil Schon I wanna hear! Not the watered down sap a roo mix job that is done on Journey releases! This is a epic track that has all the trimming of late 70s early 80s Pomp Rock! Acoustic guitar/electric guitar/keys/Drums/Huge vocals! It’s all hear it’s basically wrapped in a package tighter than a Snickers Chocolate Bar!

DREAM ON- big time happy go lucky driving song I mean these are feel good tunes! This one is tailored made for radio! Man I hear Styx in this tune if Styx was playing at 190 mphs! Big chorus and the Saints know the deal. Don’t bore us get to the chorus and oh yeah the Aldrich solo! He steps up and drives the song and man the cat knows his deal don’t solo forever keeping it short and simple is no big deal!

DONT WALK AWAY- piano and man this song is good the verse is mellow and the song well this is a power ballad and so the chorus amps up a bit and the solo is smoking good…

HERE FOREVER- piano once again starts this song and it has more oomph than Don’t Walk Away but I think I woulda kept these two apart(my gripe) but still it’s good! I mean once again it’s down to the guitaring …

STRANGERS TO THIS LIFE- back to AOR Rock! The pre chorus is good, love the use of the Hammond organ on some of these tunes. I hear Whitesnake 1987 style in this tune and no not Slip Of The Tongue Whitesnake ….Geez seriously I guess I had to note that to my friends (readers out there)out there.

BETTER WORLD- umm you might think I’m on something but a part of this I hear Ozzys Shot In The Dark in the  chorus. The song shifts speeds and piano plays a part I mean it’s commercial Rock! I still can’t get that few bars of Shot  In The Dark out of my noggin! Hahahaha….great solo….shit man Aldrich is taking this record and carrying it on his shoulders to keep the hard rocker in me happy! Bravo Dougie boy!

HOW TO MEND A BROKEN HEART- cool rocker of a track! Deener pounds the skins and the vocals and this song will go over live well. The band is firing on its cylinders here. Man I guess I gotta give some props to Jack Blades as he carries the bottom end through out the record, knows his place and doesn’t overplay but than again if he did Aldrich would drown him out!

IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER(Fernandos Song) -piano once again paces this track and it’s a power ballad but Deen drives the tune forward with his drums (thanks a bunch) and it’s a fitting finale to a rock record.

IN CONCLUSION-ha…this is a very good record! I purposely tried to stay away from Journeyisms on this review and why not these guys should be commended for doing there own deal and if they could have have kept the two Journey handlers off this record it would have been better but like I said it’s about paying bills! Doug Aldrich holy shit the guys playing on here is just plain awesome! He plays at speeds when he has to,and can slow down when he has to! In other word he plays to the song and  not all over the fuckin place to make it a shred fest to give this old man(me) a headache!

Kudos to Aldrich/Castronovo and Blades and Jon for reviewing it!(good job chap)…..
