The Rolling Stones/Totally Stripped(2016)

You gotta love The Stones  even though they too have a ton of compilations, greatest hits sets, live albums they can always make it interesting.

Case in point. Totally Stripped is The Stones rocking it still and even though it’s the Stones stripping back on a lot of bells and whistles and rocking out these 14 tracks.  These tracks are not snooze ville renditions! No Way Jose! It’s the Stones playing with a ferocity a hard swift boot in the ass that makes this album real enjoyable!

Mick Jagger/Keef/Ronnie Wood/Charlie Watts/Daryl Jones/Chuck Leavell/Bobby Keys/Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fisher Lay down the Stones Juggernaut Sonically!

Check out these 14 Bad Boys….

“Not Fade Away” – Amsterdam
“Honky Tonk Women” – Paris
“Dead Flowers” – Amsterdam
“Faraway Eyes” – London
“Shine A Light” – Amsterdam
“I Go Wild” – Paris
“Miss You” – London
“Like A Rolling Stone” – Amsterdam
“Brown Sugar” – Paris
“Midnight Rambler” – London
“Jumpin’ Jack Flash” – Paris
“Gimme Shelter” – Amsterdam
“Rip This Joint” – Amsterdam
“Street Fighting Man” – Amsterdam

First of all these recordings are from 1995 so their  2 plus decades old! No biggie as the Stones were firing on all 4 cylinders during the Voodoo Lounge Tour..

1995 The Stones released Stripped which features some of these tunes but these songs on Totally Stripped are recorded on  different nights (except for Street Fighting Man)  than what was heard on Stripped!

Cool idea and to be honest once I read that I was onboard!

Neat that I Go Wild from the Voodoo Lounge album is featured here in a rocked up jam out version and I will tell you that Mick N Keef are strong here while Ronnie bends and flicks some neat riffs..

Faraway Eyes is featured and is rarely played so thats a bonus as it’s a great track. A slower paced Stones track…..

The real deal for me on this album is Midnight Rambler. Always have and always will love this track. This is the song for me that makes The Stones great! Ron and Keef lock horns on the guitars while Charlie drives the tune from behind his drum kit! Everyone talks about Jagger and his deal as one of the best frontman in rock but no one talks about his harmonica playing. Mick gives er on the Gob Iron. Midnight Rambler is one of those songs you don’t want to end and what is most impressive is how the Stones slow the tune right down and then on cue ramp it up without falling all over themselves as they crank it back up! Total Gem!

Gimmie Shelter….is another song built around that guitar riff and the backing vocal of Fisher who Grand Slams it out of the park with her singing! I always think of the movie Casino and Coke  when I hear this song! Ha! Another all time great..what can be said about it?

A real nice addition here is the inclusion of Rip This Joint. The boys start it and Mick kinda drifts and then Bam it stops within the first few bars! The band rock it back up and are off! It’s good to see them leave mistakes on here as it shows they can still be a bar band at heart and be sloppy yet they can mop up their mistake and continue without missing a beat! This is what makes em great!

Glad this album came out as don’t be fooled by the title as you may think its a whole unplugged deal…

Nope its the Stones…an all out Barroom Boogie Assault!

Rolling Stones Live In Hampton Virginia 1981

Since its the end of KMA Week here at Arena Rock I thought I would do something that I have never done and that’s drop 2 reviews minutes apart! Ha! So enjoy part 2 folks ….

Ever since I got to know Aaron I realized just how big of a Stones fan he was and I told him How great this show was and he should get it and he did so I basically have verbally bombarded him at various times about “where’s the Hampton Stones review?” Like a  blabbering idiot enough to stir him with amusement! Ha!!

So dude I have had to take matters into my own hands!

Just like how I dig the early 80s version of The Who I also really dig the early 80s version of The Stones especially there live material from that era!

The Stones in 1981 released the classic Tatoo You album and of course followed in 1982 the fantastic Still Life Live album from that tour!

I really love  the playing of the Stones on the Still Life release and here’s my spin on it…click here….https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2014/08/22/sonic-waves-rolling-stonesstill-life/

The one thing that bummed me out about Still Life was that it was a single live album not a double album. Gripes aside it was just a little while ago that The Stones on the website starting releasing past live shows from there Vault!

One of these shows was the full Hampton Virginia (1981)show! 26 tunes and once i seen that Poof Instant download!

Charlie Watts,Ian Stewart(RIP),Ronnie Wood,Keef Richards,Bill Wyman and Mick Jagger pull off and give me more songs 26 in total for the full meal Stones deal!

Songs that didn’t make the Still Life cut are fantastic nuggets like When The Whip Comes Down,Neighbours,Black Limosuine,Beast Of Burden,Waiting On A Friend,Let It Bleed,You Can’t Always Get What You Want, my personl fav Keef Tune in Little T&A,Let It Bleed,Tumbling Dice,She’s So Cold,Hang Fire,Honkey Tonk Women and Brown Sugar!

This is the best Stones set ever! Sure I like there other things latter on especially Voodoo Lounge but Wowzers kids these songs are golden and the best thing I like is its the Stones with just Stewie on the piano and some dudes on horns on a few other tracks playing with out the bells and whistles before the Stones in the late 80s incorperated backing singers and made there band bigger! Case in point a few months back i reviewed the Stones single Doom And Gloom along with Highwire and well read about how I just like how the Stones just got back to the basics…https://superdekes.wordpress.com/2015/01/23/cool-lil-numbers-rolling-stonesdoom-and-gloomhighwire/

I just like this stripped down version best!

Gotta love Jagger at the Hampton show as it was filmed for ppv special. He name checks all the cities that are watching on ppv! Ha what a lead singer/businessman while always keeping a eye on the $$$$$!

The Stones prove without a doubt that they were a serious Ass Kicker live act back in 1981!

Rolling Stoned In Minneapolis

image image

So 1994 and the biggie tour that year(along with Pink Floyd)is the Stones supporting there great new release Voodoo Lounge and when they played Toronto in August of 1994 myself and Tbone flew down to that show with the Stone Temple Pilots opening and what a great bill. When it announced also that the Stones would be playing Minneapolis Dec 11 1994 my pal Oinks who went haywire in  good way and bought all those Stone reissues in 94 was in and we were off to Minnie…….

Through the cold and snow me and Oinks made it safe and sound and man it was freezing cold in Minneapolis but did we give a shit? Nope it’s the Stones and I think Oinks in fairness to him was deaf in the ears of me blathering on like a idiot (all the way down to the show from Tbay which is a 6 hour drive.) about the Voodoo Lounge show from Toronto! The dude was a good sport!

The Spin Doctors were the opening act and well there tank was running on empty from there earlier success so I guess this Stones opening gig was probably there last time playing to 50,000 plus crowds but man that first album of there’s Pocket Full Of Kryptonite had some good tracks like What Time Is It?/ Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong and the biggie catchy tune Two Princes! The crowd was receptive to them and now……

Tribal drums, swirling lights big ass stage production, over the top props(Honkey Tonk) and the 5 fellas calling themselves the Stones!(Jagger/Richards/Wood/Jones and Watts..you all know there names so I’m cheating here!) take the stage to Not Fade Away and boom Mick is on the harmonica and man…what can you say this show is huge!

So what do Tumbling Dice,You Got Me Rocking,Shattered,Live With Me,Sparks Will Fly,Satisfaction and Beast Of Burden have in common?

Classic Tracks folks and thats just the first 8 songs! Now onto more as in Far Away Eyes,Heartbreaker,(personal fav is next) Love Is Strong,It’s All Over Now,I Go Wild,Miss You and Honkey Tonk Women and Wowzers now one of my highlights of the Minnie show when good Ol Keef stammers up to the mic and launches into Before They Make Me Run(another personal fav of mine) and The Worst!

One of there epic tracks Sympathy For The Devil with crowd chants of woo hoo hoo woo included,Monkey Man and a all time great Street Fighting Man! The Steel Wheels Tour opening song Start Me Up is cranked and right into Its Only Rock N Roll and closing out things my favourite song about porridge! Brown Sugar! Ha!

Course no Stone show finishes without Jumpin Jack Flash being played and fireworks over the huge Chrome stage are firing  off and man if me and Oinks had been baked we woulda been flashbacking as if we were in some trenches in Vietnam….

Great show ….great band…..classic songs….shit man this was huge!

Fast forward to April 2015 and a pal of mine from work named Clinton told me the Stones are hitting the road playing something like 15 dates and Minneapolis is one of em! He asked me my thoughts I said if there playing the enormo domes and stadiums you will not see a bigger production than The Stones and well…..Gooooooooo!

Case in point the video I posted is the Voodoo Lounge tour from Rio and you all can see for yourselves what a huge deal this was! Check out the video at the 40 second or so mark….man thats how you start a stadium gig!

Cool LiL Numbers…Rolling Stones/Doom and Gloom/Highwire

Something different here at Arena Rock HQ! Today I’m just gonna throw down a couple of reviews of not albums but a couple of real cool Stones songs! First up the Stones track Doom And Gloom is from 2012 and it was attached to there GRRR Greatest Hits set! Now how many more comps do I need to own with  Satisfaction?? Ummm none too be honest with Ya but holy crap the Stones pulled out a Gem here with some Doom and Gloom. The title intrigued me so I clicked on iTunes and after the one minute sample I was hooked and purchased it for whatever it was $1.29!

Geezus! Keef and Ronnie plug in and go old school with the guitars man the sound is just the basics with two guitars,Charlie Watts on drums,Daryl Jones slammimg down the bass and Mick Jagger being the ringleader(love how Mick emphasizes ‘Tightening of the Screeeeeeews!)and throwing down some real cool lyrics(watch the vid, crank it!)  This song to me is the Stones at there best, just simple rock, ditch the horns, ditch the chic backing singers, ditch the keys, just 5 guys rocking it out, well 5 old guys that are still rocking!

I was really hoping that this song would lead to a back to basics Stones record but nope! No go, just another tour playing the hits again and well that’s what the masses want but what Ol Dekes wants is just a Straight ahead rock record from these guys…..

Shit at there age, that isn’t gonna happen but I didn’t think they  had a great rock track like Doom And Gloom left in there tank as well!

The second tune I’m gonna ramble on for a bit is Highwire. It was a end of the album studio track recorded in 1991 and added to the end of the Stones live album Flashpoint. There was a second studio track called Sex Drive but naaaa Highwire is where it’s at! This song kicks off with a super duper catchy riff that’s used in the pre chorus and man Charlie does that quick snappy snare drum deal that he’s famous for Snap,Crackle and Charlie ….boom…locked/loaded and Keef and Ronnie lay down the guitars and this song does have some studio polish but it drives man. Big budget vid for the time wonder if this set was used In that fruity movie FreeJack that Jagger did with Emilio Estevez? In early 1992 Remember that one ? Ha….not to many people did! Actually this tune would have fit nice and snug on the next Stones release the classic Voodoo Lounge!

If you decide to spend  a few bucks on iTunes buy these two Gems! Just simple straight ahead rock! This shit can’t be beat!

SONIC WAVES….Rolling Stones/Voodoo Lounge

Hubba Bubba and the Stones release the Voodoo Lounge( great title) album and yep if your gonna compare this to Exile On Main Street,Tattoo You,Some Girls don’t bother man it ain’t close in my books as those three are classics but I tell ya what! Give Keef,Mick,Woody,Charlie and Daryl( new bass guy at the time) there due they put out a real cool rock record right in the smack dab of Grunge Mania(kinda of)…

Pour yourself a Tall Cool One and kick back in the Voodoo Lounge….

LOVE IS STRONG-Ol Charlie Watts snaps this song into, action and before long here’s Mick kicking it Ol school on the harmonica! Back in 94 and even now in 2015(21 friggin years) this is a great Stones song! Cool pace driven by the drums and new bass boy with Keef and Ron lay it down with the guitars! Great tune!

YOU GOT ME ROCKING- ha the Stones may be saying we’re almost all 100 yrs old but we can still kick it into overdrive boy do they ever as the song plows  forward and man it’s one of my fav tunes by these guys! Listen to Mick tell us about being the butcher cutting the meat or being a pitcher down in a slump! Pitcher and a Butcher name dropped in the same song. Tell me another song out there that you can say you heard that about. Ha…

SPARKS WILL FLY-yep song 3 and the Stones are getting our attention with this cool little rocker along with some real fast paced snappy acoustic along with the electric guitars! You like the Stones serving up little hot corkers of tunes! This is one …..

THE WORST-Keef staggers up to the mic and tells us he’s the worst well kinda, moody kind of tune all 2.5 minutes of it. Keef’s singing is a acquired taste but man he just cracks me up with his attitude its so rock n roll so I’m sure he would tell me to fuck off If I ever asked him about his vocals…..or he would gut me like a fish with his knife collection!

NEW FACES-Mick tells us that he’s the new kid In town and this is old school Stones well to me anyways like early 70s or something to effect! It works and yeah is that a harpsichord ? Different sound but Mick delivers it vocally!

MOON IS UP-different kind of Stones with a cool neat rhythm and Ronnie and Keef strumming along and considering this the Stones still pull off a great track! It’s different but a cool different! Also of note is some neat use of a steel guitar in it as well!

OUT OF TEARS-this I guess was the big single from Voodoo Lounge! The keys drive this song down the road and to be honest with Ya back in 94 I understood the game with The Stones doing this but in 2015 i’m ok with it! This song has aged well!

I GO WILD- they played this on the Lounge tour and it’s a good driving concert tune! Mick and the boys deliver this one well! The guitars on this tune you just wanna crank cuz it’s Ronnie/Keef! What more else is there to say! Charlie lays down some real cool groove and Daryl Jones drives the bass train ..full steam ahead!

BRAND NEW CAR- funky kinda song with Mick telling us about his new Funky New Car! Along with a new Star! With some Caviar! Seriously that’s Mick playing all kinds of sexual innuendo with this tune kinda creepy but hahahaha….it’s Dirty Mick for Christ sakes!

SWEETHEARTS TOGETHER- Stones go country with acoustics and it’s a real good song the vocals and the acoustics of it and Charlie still drives the drums with brushes! I  really can’t stand country music especially with these artists like the Crüe doing tribute albums with current artists like Fuck off already. The only one country act  I can handle is Eric Church cuz he reminds me of Steve Earle from Copperhead Road era! Sorry had too vent ! Accordion makes a appearance in this track as well so my own father would have dug this as well! Stones should just put all there countrified tracks on a disc that would be cool!

SUCK ON THE JUGULAR-the Stones go funky on this track! Ronnie and Keef challenge there inner 70s riffing on this and man the drums are real good as is Chuck Leavell on the keys!

BLINDED BY RAINBOWS- this is one of the best Stones tunes I have ever heard and it’s buried towards the back of the lounge! It’s another sounding country tune but it just flows and man what a great track! The chorus of this tune is Gold! Cool song well played!

BABY BREAK IT DOWN-the Stones hit the chorus right out of the gate and it’s cool as the guitars are mixed with the rhythm in the right ear and the the left ear must be Keef just flinging off notes now and than! Cool song with some neat slide as the solo!

THRU AND THRU- Keefs lead vocal and this is now 5 minutes of Keef just doing a slow wham jam thank Ya maam kinda tune! If anybody has been Thru and Thru it’s Keef! The  percussion just drops in now and than..bam and bam! Keef has blues man…

MEAN DISPOSITION-the end folks and the Stones crank it back up in the Voodoo Lounge! This is the Stones rocking out Til the end of the album! Real cool shuffle with the drums/bass and keys with the guitars. Real cool swing! Sounds 50ish but mixed with the 90s tossed into a blender!

IN CONCLUSION- The Stones were big news in 94 with a super duper stage show and album to boot! Sure for some, the hardcore may think this is not a great record but hey to me it is and it’s a shame cuz no one ever talks about this one and fair enuff. But If Ya come across it somewhere scoop it!

SONIC WAVES…..Rolling Stones/Still Life

This review is for Aaron at Keeps Me Alive ….and also after I wrote this I pushed the Publish key instead of the edit key..hahahaha(Rookie)….so enjoy the bonus review friends!

Still Life came out in 1982( a year  after the Tattoo You tour of which this was recorded) but I did not hear it until at least  spring of 1983 due to who knows why? I had bought Tattoo You  but that was it. Now you may be asking yourself how the hell would Deke nail down a time of year let alone a time of year 31 years ago, well it’s simple Sherlock, I was playing outdoor soccer for my high school at the time (Lakeview) and I used to get a ride to the games from a friend. His older brother had a cassette copy of Still Life in his car. Buddy played it and I wàs hooked ….holy crap the Stones put out a bootleg..hahaha..probably not but it sure sounded live and raw! Even all these years late I still love this album of the Stones. For further listening check out the Live Hampton 1981 show for a full version of the concert. This is the Stones for Gods sake, live and more live. Sure now they put a live album like every year with all the bells and whistles. Still Life is a stripped down Stones just them and Stu(rip) and a couple of horns. The way I like em!

Lets see what Mick an Keef were rolling back in 1981

UNDER MY THUMB-Ladies and Gentlemen( says the announcer) The Rolling Stones!!!!! and were off Mick working the crowd,Keith & Ronnie laying down the guitars while Charlie & Bill hold down the fort. This is the Stones off to a rocking good time.

LETS SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER-Mick the ringleader welcomes everyone to the show and too everyone at home watching on tv, drinking a few beers and smoking a few joints! Mick you are a bad ass brother.

SHATTERED -is a great Stones track, kinda like Mick telling us about American life, the dream so to,speak and you could end up Shattered and splattered in the streets of NYC!

TWENTY FLIGHT ROCK- this is one minute 30 seconds of boogie woogie Stones at there best..included is one of the sleaziest, sloppiest solos of all time that only Ronnie and Keef could pull off and sound cool…..What!!! the songs done???

GOING TO A GO-GO- was the single/video from this. It’s Mick creeping around the bars. I was always surprised that they went with this one, than again it’s the Stones…they do what they want!

LET ME GO-is from the album Emotional Rescue. Cool that there putting songs on this live release that you normally wouldn’t think of. Gotta respect it. It’s a typical little firecracker of a song.

TIME IS ON MY SIDE- so the Stones are gonna slow it down well they gotta you know, dig back in the vaults to keep the die hards happy at the concert in other words it’s like going to see Aerosmith nowadays and if your a lifelong fan you wanna hear Rats In The Cellar, not that Armageddon drivel ! Here’s to you……

JUST MY IMAGINATION- cool song, just let your imagination run away ,run away…..neat use of the sax in this and good ol Charlie plows it along on the drums……

START ME UP- Keef kicks it off with a riff that everyone has heard a million times but it’s still cool  even 33 yrs later. And when I think of of the Tatoo You release I think of this track and Little T&A…my two faves and oh yeah toss in Black Limousine as well……

STAR SPANGLED BANNER- and the band exits the show, counts there cash while Hendrixs version of the Star Spangled plays out….

IN CONCLUSION- back in 83 my Stones collection consisted of Tattoo You and a 45 of a Emotional Rescue(save me Mick!) but once I heard this …I had to get it especially at a time when lots of bands in the early 80s weren’t putting out live product for domestic release. Smart business man those ol Geezers were……

The video is Little T&A from the Tattoo You tour….now it’s not on Still Life(shoulda been) but it’s Keith singing hahahaha…..love it! For further listening check out the live Hampton 81 show…..it’s the full meal deal ..great live album……
