Sebastian Bach/ 18 & Life On Skid Row(2016)

Book Review Time……

Sebastian Bach joins the long line of Rock Dude’s writing their tale of Excess/Mayhem/Craziness. Well you get the Drift.

The one thing I can say is Bach grew up in Ontario so there’s my connection and he writes about a ton of Canadiana in his Book. More on that later…

Baz opens the  book with the incident in 1990 when Skid Row was opening for Aerosmith and someone  in the crowd tossed a bottle hit Bach in the melon and cut him open.  Baz did what he does best and that is go berserk(wouldn’t you?). He basically picked up the broken bottle seen the guy who had thrown it  as the dude in the crowd was flipping him off and tossed the bottle at him and leapt  into the crowd. Bach broke the guys jaw who had tossed the bottle but Sebastian also broke the nose of a young girl in the crowd who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Just like an Old School Western Skid Rows Managers after there set told them “Get on the bus and over the State Line” They didn’t make it and Bach was arrested by the police.

Sebastian says this was the first real clink in the armour of Skid Row and problems would soon arise.

The Book shifts back to his early years growing up first in the Bahama’s than onto California and finally Peterborough Ontario as David Bierk(Sebastian’s Father) took a Fulltime job at an Art Gallery.

Bach goes into good detail about growing up as a child in Southern Ontario. His fascination with Comics and KISS in the mid to late 70’s and I will say that Bach has a passion for this.

Bach’s world came crashing down when his parents got Divorced in 1979 and it was Sebastian who writes in the book that his first time seeing KISS in Toronto back in 1979 was the last time that his Family ever did anything  together as a family unit as  his father had left already.

Great detail is also written about when Baz started playing the Toronto Bar circuit in the early to mid 80’s and meeting in Toronto Nikki Sixx and giving him a demo tape that weaved its way to New Jersey and lo and behold  Bach joined Skid Row.

Of course myself  being a Hard Rocker this is really where the Book takes off. Tales of Excess are detailed and no one is safe! Ask Lars Ulrich! Bach though keeps it cool with what he writes about and it will probably give those people more street cred if anything!

So to not give away too much I ‘m going break it down to a few Stories or as I would call them Whut??  Many more but here’s a 3 Pack Sample…

1- First night of Skid Row opening for Guns N Roses at  Alpine Valley  (May of 1991.) An unruly person backstage makes derogatory remarks about Sebastian. So what does he do? Well he punched the guy out. Turned out it was Gun’s Guitarist Izzy  Stradlin’s  brother! Whut?

2-Backstage at an Los Angeles Aerosmith show(1990) Bach is joined by David Lee Roth and Axl Rose. As Roth downs shots of Jack Daniels he looks at Sebastian  and Axl and  Roth says ” I here there’s a couple of pretenders to Mah Throne!” Bach quotes Roth as saying “Mah” LOL. I won’t tell you what happened next but it’s worth the read  with an end to this tale that you won’t believe!  Double Whut??

3- One of the biggest shock a roo’s for me  was the guys that he partied with in Bon Jovi. Bach writes about Richie Sambora’s diet of choice in the late 80’s that doesn’t surprise me. What did was Jovi Keyboardist David Bryan  snorting speedball’s! Triple Whut??  HA!

Bach goes into detail about the Music Business as well.

After 1992’s Slave To The Grind Tour. Bach thinking  he was going to have a  business meeting with his managers to receive a huge cheque after the success of the tour.

Bach writes that  they had to pay off everything meaning all the managers/accountants/crew/food/booze and the fact that their manager told them that since they wanted to be like KISS and shoot off pyro it was costing them $3000 a blast! Bach also writes he  learned that day  what the term “Shortfall” is…

(Side note…. when Skid Row played here in 92 the Fire Marshall would not allow their pyro to be used. So they saved dough in Thunder Bay for one night anyways..)

Of course the whole fallout of Skid Row is written about and as Bach  is kicked out he eventually moves on and becomes the solo act/hits up Broadway for a part in Phantom Of The Opera/ ends up doing Tv on the Gilmore Girls and The Trailer Park Boys/renews his friendship with Axl Rose. (great story also when Axl/Baz bump into Jon Bon Jovi)

The book ends up with his personal life getting on track and moving on.

For myself this was a great read! As it has Ontario roots that Bach speaks from so I get it. Bach does name drop a bunch of people and he could have really hammered on the Skid Row guy’s but he doesn’t air anybody’s  dirt just the problems that he had on a personal level. That surprised me as he could  have torched I’m sure Rachel Bolan but give Bach credit he gave a lot of people a pass….

Book is worth the Dough $$$…!

Worth a Reread!

Sebastian Bach(Skids Into Tbay) With Deke,Tbone & Women In Tow!

Sebastian Bach/Jan 22 2010/ Thunder Bay Ontario/Roxys Nightclub

So ol Baz returns to Tbay after a 18 year absence! So of course myself and Tbone are in tow and with us are two very special guests! That would be our wives! In other words there the women I make reference to in the title of this blog! Settle down people this isn’t TMZ here!

Of course the place is packed out pretty much and when Sebastian and his hired helps(Bobby Jarzombek (drums)Nick Sterling(guitar),Rob DeLuca (bass) Johnny Chromatic (guitar) hit the stage opening with Back In The Saddle (Aerosmith classic watch the video posted!)) it’s apparent like these bands that I caught in arenas back in there day that when they play at Arena decibel levels in a club  it does not work!

(When Quiet Riot played the exact same place here in Tbay in 1999 they played so loud that mine and Tbones ears were ringing for hours after)

Second song in is Slave To The Grind and it’s played at break neck speed and here goes Baz which would be one of the first of many times hollering at the sound guy! Who’s at fault I dunno but turn the fuckin sound down! It’s so trebley that the poor bass dude (DeLuca)cannot be heard! All I hear is Bazs vocals trying to roar over the drums and guitars!

Never thought I would say this but I was glad to hear I Remember You just  to get a break of the sound with the intro being acoustic but make no mistake Baz and Band rock thru the Skid Row catalogue with Piece Of Me,18 and Life, and other helpers from the 3 albums that he recorded with Skid Row. No Mudkicker…Kick…that night though! Massive Bummer!

Course Sebastian was plugging his current release Angel Down which wasn’t a bad record I bought it off iTunes when I realized we would be going to this show! He played that tune American Metalhead which he christened it to Canadian Metalhead(of course!) all in all except for the sound which was god aweful on the ears it was a good show!

Tbone knew the guy who owned Roxy’s Nightclub and when we rolled into the parking lot the line was deep and it was freezing out so Tbone took control of the situation and called the owner direct and viola we went in a side door and I felt like King Of The  World or maybe it was Slave To The Grind! Anyways cool move T…..

SONIC WAVES….Skid Row/Slave To The Grind

Ya know from Aug 1989 to June 1992 i seen Skid Row 5 times! 4 as a opener and once as a headliner when they actually showed up to Tbay back in June Of 92! (Reviewed here)

Skid Rows debut of course was pretty good with the singles 18 & Life(dug the vid with those two schmucks in it and one of them going to the slammer! Hahahaha..your crime is time!) I  Remember You(meh)and some silly cheese like Big Guns and Rattlesnake Shake and man they got on a huge arena tour in 1989(opening for Bon Jingles Jovi) and of course it took off from there.

June of 1991 and Sebastain Bach,Dave Sabo,Rob Affuso,Rachel Bolan and Scotti Hill release to what I would even call today a classic! Yeah man for sure, why the fuck not? There is no early nineties Cheese Whiz slices on here what it does have is a heavy dark undertone, heavy songs not all fast heavy some heavy riffs, stellar production from Michael Wagner(bass sound on here is awesome) good all around vocals,it’s all here kids….sooooooo….

The Party’s Over So Get The….well you know the drill…

MONKEY BUSINESS-some neat guitar picking by Hill And Sabo start off the album and before you know it ,Baz hollers and drums and bass join and man the sonics are reaaaaal good! The bass here is mixed awesome! It’s evident when you compare track one from Rows debut in 1989 (Big Guns ) and track one  from STTG (Monkey Business) gone is the cheese whiz fruit ball lyrics in its place is a leaner meaner Skid Row and no messing around! The solos and drums are heavy….. Great start…..

SLAVE TO THE GRIND-so we go from heavier to real heavy and man this song cooks! Affuso on his drums double bass this track like a runaway train and man the lyrics are good, the solos are ripping fast and Baz is hammering down some real vocal chops! I still will chirp at work “Won’t be the one left behind”  Hahaha….people at work might  think I’m crazy or they just ignore me..hahaha…it’s all good!

THE THREAT-drums, guitar bass are dumped in the Skid  Row Music Blender and out pops The Threat! This song is great real slick verse, cool chorus and the bass is just jacked on this! I’m really surprised more of these bands back than didn’t try to high jack Bolans bass sound on this record! 24 Friggin  years later and it still sounds good! Well to my blown out deaf left year!(that ones for you Metal Todd!)

QUICKSAND JESUS- cool title and pretty good moody slow kinda heavy groove and this song has the big power chorus but no sirreeee! This ain’t no Poison mush this is Skid Crush(ha) Sabo and Hill are young guns totally fuggin ugly dudes but hey these two cats have the metal chops down and when they have too they can put the breaks on the speed riffing and chill out some huge bombastic rock! Baz nails the vocal and well he does that all over this record! Jesus would be proud!

PYSCHO LOVE- Affuso locks his drums with Bolans bass and boom this song is off the hook crazy good and it goes cuckoo when the two guitars join! The cymbals are smashing loud during the chorus and it’s about the only thing that is louder than Bazs voice(kinda). Also love a bit of feedback towards the end and that makes me believe that the Marshalls are cranked in the studio!

BEGGARS DAY-Ha…sometimes don’t always expect the expected here at Arena Rock! You want to know my deal with Get The Fudge Out!? Naaa not today as its Beggars Day! This tune reminds me of a later day Aerosmith rocker the chorus is pretty damn good I mean they kinda go with the big gang backing vocals but still though a real good track one worth checking out…see vid above!

LIVIN ON A CHAINGANG- Baz and the band smash some heavy action off the hop and boom Baz is hollering and you know what? We are all Livin On The Chain Gang…the lyrics in this say it all I think these lyrics sum up Monday-Friday working…’Busted on a rock pile /Dusted in the heat/Shackled to the system/And draggin my feet….

CREEPSHOW-big drums and big riffs start this groovy like metal shuffle of a tune. Hey the lyrics are kinda Gene Simmons big dumbo arena rockish stylings but you know what? I will cut the Row fellas some slack! The music i dig the lyrics not so much but hey ..I saw your baby at the Creepshow! Ok sometimes goofy funny stuff ends up being funny shit!

IN A DARKENED ROOM-kinda moodish piece of slower paced metal! Skids aren’t Soft Row here Ummm no way quite the contrary amigo! I don’t care who the hell you are you can’t go 120 mph all the time just don’t pull a Journey like power junk ballad on me! Sabo and comp don’t care they just do,what they do!  This tune has a great solo in it!

RIOT ACT- super duper riffing guitar, off the rocker drumming and a singer going bloody mental and this is Skid Row trying to derail the train off the tracks! This song rocks the lyrics are genius! The  guitar metal solo is genius! Baz sings good and doesn’t do any goofy falsetto and kicks it in the ass! Still remember them playing this in Tbay and I betcha they shaved off a full minute off of this track playing it live! Speed man …and not by playing it quick but the stuff that makes you play it quick!

MUDKICKER-ok I will say it this is one of Skid Rows best tunes! An end of album slow Sludgey Sabbathey kind of grind that just fuckin rules! The song starts off slow an heavy and Baz rips down the vocals the bass is friggin cool heavy along with Affusos drums and man oh man a bonafide classic! Holy hell ring the bell just dig this song! Love the lyrics in this tune and man does it not tell the truth about everyday living. Having said all that watch the video and you can sing along at work as the lyrics are posted! Mudkicker ..Kick …Kickin me down …Mudkicker Kick…Kickin me down….tell your boss man or lady DeKEs sent Ya! For a ass Kickin good live version click the link to the Tbay show above for Mudkicker!

WASTED TIME- yeah man the Skids end this heavy record with a heavy umm  ballad kinda thingy! It’s ok man I can handle this as they put it at the end and fair enough. The solos in this song are good this thing rocks in a different kind of way! I mean Poison well they can get lost…..

IN CONCLUSION- Skid Row 1991 in my mind basically took a bands like Poison,Trixter,Bullet Boys and gave them a swift hard kick in the ass into the cheapie bins in my books! It’s amazing that The Skids grew    by leaps and bounds from the debut in just over 2 years! Gone was the sterile production of the debut, gone was Big Guns(sorry Aaron…Ha!) and those tuity metal fruity kinda tunes. In its place was Slave To The Grind with heavy songs, playing, production, artwork everything hell there lyrics are classic I mean how can you not dig the use of the word “SAPSUCKER”in Mudkicker!

You Can’t Be King Of The World If You’re SLAVE TO THE GRIND….

June 22 1992/Skid Row/Killer Dwarfs

Wowzers,Skid Row just a year earlier score a 1 album in the US of A and there playing Tbay as part of there Canadian Tour? I think this may have something to do with Sebastian Bach as I recall reading in a old music magazine from TO called M.E.A.T Magazine that Bach said he’s played all over the world and he’s not going home til he plays Thunder Bay!…hahahaha…

So the show was originally scheduled on June 15th but I guess Bach was sick so they pushed the show a week later. Give em credit they could have blown us off big time and just trucked through. Me and my brother Todd zipped to the Gardens and we went down to the floor and for a pretty good view of the stage . Up first was TO’s own Killer Dwarfs plugging there Method To Madness release. These guys were pretty cool with Russ the lead singer doing handstands, summersaults while not missing a beat. Some of the tracks like Hard Luck Town,Dirty Weapons,Stand Tall,Keep The Spirit Alive and others were played good band. Kept me and my brother amused to say the least!

Well now Skid Row is coming on and there intro music is the Beastie Boys Fight For Your Right To Party and you could here Sebastion chirping to the crowd over the song. You could hear him not see him(he was still backstage). One of his best comments was along the lines of ” c’mon you lazy ass motherf#%kers from  Thunder Bay wake up” hey Baz you know Tbay crowds all to well!

And kaboom, well no kaboom word on the street was there was no pyro allowed(local Fire Marshall ) but man they came out in hyper drive with Slave To The Grind complete with a pretty big stage set and lighting rig and these Skid Row guys were wired up to say the least. From there onto Big Guns,Here I Am,Makin A Mess,18&Life,Piece Of Me these guys weren’t letting up hey how about Psycho Therapy,Psycho Love, Mudkicker,Monkey Business( with Sebastian being bad assed and lighting a little Mary Jane in front of the crowd do that nowadays in front of a crowd, people would be like MEH!),party favourite Get The Fuck Out…and they improvised a bit when they looked at each other as too what to to play now which ended being a bit of God Of Thunder by KISS and Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult….they ended the show with I Remember You followed by of course Youth Gone Wild!

Too bad this band went into the tank in all aspects,of course they put out Subhuman Race 3 yrs later not to many cared, than Baz was booted or quit so another lead singer gone and Skid Row got some other guy and now they play clubs!? Hey man good on em for continuing on,I have absolutely zero interest in Skid Row nowadays whatever but I tell ya I give em respect for showing up to Tbay back when they could have easily like I said earlier just cruised by…..

Check out the two vids above….Slave To The Grind this live version is how I remember them here in Tbay(minus the pyro) ..umm these dudes are like I said earlIer WIRED!

Mudkicker the next vid is just a plain out awesome song as a matter of fact I still can listen to it today as it’s not a cheeseball kinda tune..listen to the lyrics man….in other words don’t take and eat crap from anyone in society especially the suits….
