Headstones/Little Army (2017)

So Hugh Dillon and his bunch of Honchos. That being Trent Carr/Tim White and some new hombres Steve Carr / Rick VanDyk and one who goes by the name of  Lyle have pumped out a new 12 Song Album that these guys are calling Little Army.

Judging by the cover they look like an army of Old Dude Misfits but these ‘Stones still have a enough juice in the tank to Kick Yo Ass!

Just 4 years ago Headstones released the excellent Love & Fury album that even dented into my Top 5 listening for the year 2013 over at Ladano HQ’s! Yeah man it was that good!

So here we are in 2017 at the halfway point of the year and this is a new band(kinda) with a new sound (kinda) and whats for certain is Hugh is still pissed(definitely, not kinda) …. well read on….

So for the first time in Headstones history a second guitarist and a keyboardist are added and to be totally honest with all of you’s out there I kinda(ha) hemmed and hawed about this as that is the one thing I always dug about these guys as they were just a ripping good time 4 piece in your face with a hard smack of Hugh’s right hand smacking you across the side of your noggin attitude thingy…

And now keyboards? Fuck??! But the keys add a texture still buried under Trent and Rick’s guitars but still there for the taking…

Yeah I’m ok with it! Like Hugh cares what this Hillbilly(MYSELF) thinks in Tbay! Ha!

From Kingston Ontario…….Headstones!

Devil’s On Fire opens the album and its Hugh firing actually the whole band is rocking and making a statement to the listeners out there that the Headstones are back so deal with it! Quick uptempo paced tune! Love Dillon’s attitude as by the second verse he sound’s pissed which comes in handy as he can ramp up and blow hell fire into the harmonica so basically if the Devil Is On Fire not too far behind is Hugh and Crew!

The rest of the albums 11 songs follow the same (kinda) blueprint of yesteryear Headstones. But don’t kid yourselves into thinking it’s just another same ol same ol. Nope it’s a kicking good time album. I like the fact that the guitars sound clean not all dirty and distorted out a different sound that is used on Broken  and the title track Little Army in which Hugh loses his shit literally lyrically about the cold hard truth. Mid tempo like burn of a track!

Timbo on the bass and Lyle the  drummer  drive the start of Sunlight Kills The Stars with some psycho like piano playing tag along with Hugh’s vocals! A different sounding track but make no mistake this is still rock!

For Your Consideration is a buck and 44 second tune. Ripping down the Dillon express and the wheels are coming off. I always liked when the Headstones do this kind of stuff. Short and to the point with a punch in the face added as well! Yee Haw!

Whoah we are now talking! Dead To Me is a killer tune that goes back back to the Teeth And Tissue days mixed with a modern twist. ‘Gutless Fuck’ Your sucking the life out of me!” Hollers Hugh and just like that he gets all amped up during the chorus and chills out during the verse! Hughie is in fine form here folks! The days of onstage smoking and spitting may be gone but he still has that edge..

Captain Of The Shit Out Of Luck has to be contender for coolest song title of 2017! The song as well is a straight ahead rocker with more cool harmonica mixed with the guitars make this a mashup of epic proportions. It’s good to see that were at the halfway point of the album and this track and Dead Again keep that vibe going and making you the listener wanting more!

The View  Here takes the previous two shit kicker of tracks and chills out with Steve and his keys keeping pace with Hugh and its a good tune. Give it up as they could have written 12 Smile And Wave tracks but what would that get em? Your right 12 Smile And Waves!

HeadStones go back in the archives as Hugh sings the tale of finding a postcard from 1989 and smoking dope from a corn cob pipe from a place called Kingston. My 5 cents is the fact that this will be the next single or close to it and I can giggle at work when I hear Hugh chime the line”Smoking dope from a corn cob pipe!” when the song is played on the radio. Of course with it being so damn catchy it will probably stick around in my noggin for hours after….Ummmm maybe this isn’t a good thing! Damn it… this is good track. Very autobiographical!

From Kingston were on a road trip with the Headstones and were off to Sunny California ! Well not exactly..,,Hugh kinda sings the tale of one getting caught up cruising around at night in the lights in Los Angeles. Keys drive this tune over the guitars (kinda) and that’s alright as Hugh takes this song over…There is a story here folks!

Oh boy here’s one called Done The Math.  A mix of piano/electric guitars and drums. Hugh sings and kinda talks his way through this tune.  Something about combinations/misdirection and social deceptions! Wowzers….deep!

Don’t Think At All ends the 12 song 39 minute album in typical Headstones fashion. Trent and Rick built this song and combined with the drums this is an end of the album stomper track! Hugh name drops a ton of cities throughout. Hugh is like a singing version of Goggle Maps! Next stop ….Hughs Fist…My Face!

Great Friggin Rock Record!

These guys have never played it safe. Back in the  mid 90’s through to the early 2000’s when Headstones would roll into Tbay these cats did not give a Fuck about anything. Dangerous came to mind as would our fair city be the one to drive Hugh off the cliff. No it never happened but it made going to see them an interesting show as they always delivered live..

So with Little Army they are once again not playing it safe. Doing it how they want and fair enough and seriously man would these guys really care…

That’s what I dig about the Headstones!

SONIC WAVES ….Headstones/Love&Fury

After a decade layoff from being Canada’s toughest bar band here comes the Headstones with there rollicking good time rock record 2012’s Love And Fury!

Hugh Dillion/ Trent Carr/Dale Harrison and Tim White reconvene and put out a record that is soooooo good that I lodged this one into my top 5 releases of 2012 over at Mikey’s place! mikeladano.com

So if you recall from my Weezer review a little ways back where I called there Blue album a 37 minute ass kicker, well the Headstones with Love&Fury deliver there own 35 minute ass kicker the only difference is the Headstones include free of charge a good backhand to the head and a swift hard boot up the ass!

Welcome back fellas…….

CHANGEMYWAYS- Timmy slaps down some cool bass and Dale joins in and they rock it with Hugh and before you know heres Trent laying down some cool riffing and says  it best ‘this is it,this is it this is the shit I’m talking about” you gonna tell Hugh to change his ways? Ha! he will change his ways if he wants to change em himself thank you veryfuckingmuch!

LONGWAYTONEVERLAND- Hugh nails down some serious Harmonica on this track! Frigg it’s good to have these guys  back! Just simple straight ahead driving rock delivered with a fist to the face! Bam love the production on this record it’s simple yet effective! This is back to basics rock n roll! Love Harrison’s drums that keeps the song shifting and of course Hugh and his Harp end the song as how he started….Attitude!

FINALANALYSIS-this track just keeps the Headstones motor running. Great solo and cool title to boot!

FARAWAYFROMHERE-this is one of the best tracks on Love and Fury! It builds with Trents guitar and the money shot is the chorus! It’s super duper catchy Headstones! Man this song cooks! Love How Hugh sings this song I mean this dude means business but he can chill it out a bit and man oh man! Rock this bad boy loud!

DONTFOLLOWTHELEADER-ha,quick bursts of guitars/ bass/drums and Hugh takes charge Don’t Follow The Leader and if you do that leader would be the Headstones and it’s safe to say you would have your ass handed to Ya! Tim slams down the bass on this tune and keeps the groove going with Dale on drums! These guys keep the song short simple and to the point!

ASTRONAUGHT-wowzers a HeadStonesBallad!? Kinda sort of. Hugh sounds pained here man in his voice but I guess that’s the effect he’s looking for! It’s a different sounding tune but hey friends it’s ok for Hugh and the boys to lay off the gas I mean it’s not the mid 90s where they were punching out albums/Tours at a pace that would do some in! And some it did!

GOBACKTHEOTHERWAY-Go,go,go,go yammers Hugh and this song starts off to me sounding like that old tune by the Vapours called Turning Japanese but Trent cranks it into hell and the ‘Stones are off an running!

SOS- a live staple in the Headstones shows since the early days when I seen EM  (1995) and Yep it’s the Abba song! Hugh/Trent/Tim and Dale take the original version shove it in a blender, dump a bottle of JD in the blender and add a ton of attitude and volia  SOS done rock style! This song is a Keeper!

BINTHISWAYFORYEARS- the first time I heard this SongI was confused! I was expecting Tweeter And The Monkey Man Headstones instead Bin This Way For Years comes out and it got different time changes the bass is pumped but man the chorus is Gold! This is one of those back of the album deals  Bin this way for years…God Dammit….Bin this way for years…

OUTTAMYLEAGUE-4 on the Floor and the Headstones are popping Pistons and blowing out there engine in this song. These cats may be 50 or so in age now but they show that they can rock it at high speeds when duty calls! Ha love the attitude of these guys always have! One show here in Tbay just remember them rocking out and especially Tim the bass dude had his down for a while riffing on his bass and when he looked up he just flipped the bird(Middle Finger) for no reason! That readers is the essence of rock n roll…if Ya don’t like it! F.U and F.U. All!

MIDNIGHTOFTHISLIFE-Hugh and the boys ease of the gas and and end the note on a chill song….just kick back and ease off the throttle … And I’m good with it! Like I would tell Hugh otherwise!

IN CONCLUSION -Headstones show up and kick ass and man this is a great rock record! 11 tracks of no B.S rock! I’m always a little skeptical about when bands implode and a bunch of years later try and capture whatever magic they once had! This here folks is not the case! Dale,Hugh,Trent and Tim throw it down and man I still hope they got a few more albums in the there  tank! Also the reason the tracks of the songs have no space in between them is thats how it showed up on my iPod when I purchased it! Ahhh Hugh you funny guy u!

Man I love the Headstones! Ever since I seen em on Muchmusic being interviewed and plugging there debut album Picture Of Health(1993). Of course Hugh Dillion back than was the anti everything to Canadian Music at the time which was good cause he would tell it like it was.

Well come 1995 and  check out the new vid for Unsound off of Teeth And Tissue! I’m getting ahead here, but  the Headstones headed out on tour and I seen em here in Tbay in the summer of 95 with my wife and we have gone everytime since than to catch em live when they have rolled through  and on occasion TBone has joined us as well but let’s talk about one of my fave albums  from em!

Lets check on Hugh/Trent/Dale and Tim and see whose ass there kickin…….

HINDSIGHT-Trent starts the action with some cool riffing and the boys rock it out of the park. This song sets the tone for the record it’s like Hugh’s telling me ya better listen or Hugh will use my forehead as a ashtray!

UNSOUND- cool bass in this tune by Tim. Loved the video for this. Check it out….great rock song period!

MARIGOLD- Trent starts off with some acoustic and of course it goes Headstones Heavy just the way I like it and man it clocks in over at 5 minutes but man who cares like I said the Headstones never played by the rules and I thank em for that!

HEARTS LOVE AND HONOR- Hugh sounds like he’s possessed in this song! Man it’s like you wouldn’t want to meet him in the alley way back in 95 but in 2014 I think he would be cool! The rest of the band push along this mid tempo tune!

MILLION DAYS IN MAY- Hugh kinda sings, kinda talks, verses are chill and than the Chrous kicks in and some cool  Tempo changes and a good solo by Trent. Dude never gets the credit on guitar but he swings a mean axe!

DRIPPING DIME SIZE DROPS- coolest title and coolest song on the record I say !  You know the deal …cops are after Hugh and he’s Dripping Dime Size Drops! Cool interplay between vocals and guitar. This is Headstones at the there best just a all out Shit Kicker! Solo is wickedly good! Don’t believe me …buy the F*#kin thing will yah!?

SWINGING-Tim and Dale take a breather on this track and there’s nice little guitar strum and Hugh spewing forth knowledge you know like…..pick yourself up and grab a addiction, alcohol is a good one along with sports, hunting and fishing..haha…love Hugh’s lyrics. Like I said he tells it like it is!

LET IT GO- heavy bassy Tune….Hugh and the boys deliver on this tune. Kinda like them showing up to your wedding reception and kicking all the grooms asses and leaving with the bridesmaids!

SAY GOODBYE- Hugh’s destroying your town and splitting, this song rocks…fast guitars ,faster drums ….man these guys don’t let up !

BURNING- another single and just a cool little strumming tune about lost love man Hugh’s got a heart but it’s black! And hey …everyone burns or so Hugh says! When Hugh speaks ..ummmm I listen!

LOOK AWAY- is another all out rocker just Headstones kicking ass and leaving us in the wreckage! Geezus these guys are a gang not a band!….this album is just a little simmering masterpiece !

TEETH AND TISSUE- cool bluesy tune and the title track. Just the title is cool. Cool that they can shift gears in musical midstream. But than again they don’t give a *#%^!

ONE MORE MOVE- Hugh goes off and  on about the radio and radio saves and the radio plays! Wonder what he thinks of Sirius radio? Hugh you reading this??? The music is kinda demonic on this track…kinda like Headstone/DC ish !!!

IN CONCLUSION- Headstones filled a void for me back in the 90s when I wasn’t getting into too much new music but here they came with there own unique spin on things and there own style. We all know they went away for a few years but they put out a killer album last year Love + Fury (which I will review)  and it’s a very good album as well.  It’s just good to know that there’s some no  ass kissing  Canadian bands out there who like I said don’t answer to anyone. Headstones are one of em!
