Robert Plant : Manic Nirvana Tour Soundboard

I have always dug Robert Plant’s solo music from the 80s and really enjoyed it even more when Bobby released “Now And Zen”(1988). When the 90s came around Plant dropped “Manic Nirvana”. Up to that point In Robert’s career I would have to say that “Manic Nirvana” is perhaps my favourite of the bunch followed by the over produced yet so ridiculously good “Now & Zen”. Robert was smart as the 80s progressed as he went from having dudes in his band that were probably closer to his age to getting a bunch of younger looking dudes as by 1988 MTV was the thing. It’s about image, you know. Plant put together a young looking rock act behind him but they had the musical muscle to back it  up live which this bootleg proves.

This boot was recorded back in Oct ’90 and what a set list. Plant goes through all of his solo career plus Robert and his young band of rockers even dipped into the Zep catalog. Overall this is a great sounding soundboard show and all players involved deliver it live. One of the highlights for me is “Liar’s Dance” which features guitarist Doug Boyle on acoustic and Plant on vocals. “Liars Dance” is one of my all time favourite Plant tracks. Boyle does his part picking and strumming  throughout. Such a killer track…
One omission from this double vinyl is “Tall Cool One” but that’s how it goes with bootlegs at times. Pictures that aren’t right and songs omitted but I ain’t bitching as I love these shows as long as they are labeled as “Soundboard”.

    1. Thanks for reading and commenting Randy. I’m lucky that theres a local guy in town here Chris who has a side hustle called the Vinyl Frontier where he does pop up shops around town on occasion. He has an European distributor who gets him this stuff. Thats the great thing about Youtube is all this stuff is on there so I will listen to before I buy it. Try before I buy.

    1. That’s awesome as his albums you will come across at times. Manic Nirvana was a score and I’m still on the hunt for Fate of Nations on vinyl.

  1. One of the curious things, and I’m talking about myself now, is while I’ve come to love Led Zeppelin, I’ve hardly explored any of Plant’s or Page’s solo efforts. As such, it’s perhaps not surprising that I wasn’t even aware of this bootleg.

That said, here’s what looks like a clip of the entire gig! The quality isn’t exactly first rate but, hey, it ain’t terrible either. And you can definitely hear Plant sounded pretty good!

  2. Nice find! A pretty good setlist…to ask a probably obvious question, saying it’s “soundboard” means it was recorded from the actual concert equipment, not some random dude with a Radio Shack tape recorder hidden in his shirt somewhere in the crowd? Because I’ve heard a few bootlegs that seemed to be made that way!

    1. Yes it’s direct from the mixing board. Good sound I can’t buy those ones with someone taping back in the day with a cassette recorder haha
      These things aren’t cheap haha

  3. I pretty much like everything RP does. Caught a Austin City broadcast a few year ago. He was playing with the Sensational Space Shifters and it was real good. I didn’t see any birth certificates but pretty sure the band was a little younger. Good stuff deKE. You know he’s going to grab some good players. I’d like to hear this one.

  4. Cool dude… I always thought he was smart as hell on how he did his solo career…he could have had a Zeppelin soundalike but he didn’t…that would have been the short term easy way out.

    1. Exactly and I read that his guitarist Doug Boyle would not play Gibson Les Pauls onstage as that would have some comparing him to Page. That was a smart move on his part.

      1. Steve Gorman from the Crowes said that in his book as he noticed that when they were opening for Plant back in 90 so he asked Boyle and that’s what he was told

      2. Yes I think Plant and Page got together in 94 after supposedly Plant through a tantrum after Jimmy did the Coverdale/Page record
