Linden Hudson: Co-Writer of the ZZ Top ELIMINATOR album!

Yup you read that title right! I did some research on Linden Hudson as I thought what a great ’10 Questions With… Linden Hudson’ it would have been!

But I tried through FaceCrack/Websites/and other social avenues to track Linden down but to no avail which is a shame. But if you ever come across this Blog Sir please feel free to contact me. Would love to hear your story about your involvement with ZZ TOP.

Please watch the  clip the video posted above that features some demo’s of the mega selling Eliminator album from the Top’s!

You will hear  snippets of four songs from Eliminator along with a story to go along with the songs on how they were recorded plus on one of the tracks you hear some blazing harmonica playing!

From my take on it. Sounds like Billy Gibbons and Linden Hudson wrote and recorded in demo form pretty much the whole album together or most of it.

The video is a fascinating as you can read along on  what was going on for the four tracks here that are posted . All  I will say is that it looks like Frank Beard and Dusty Hill got a lot of time off during the actual recording of the final result of Eliminator!

I have no idea why Linden was not acknowledged but after my recent interview with Jonathan Valen this stuff makes sense.

I still hold this album in High Regard as its easily one of all my time Fav’s! But credit should be given where credit is due.

Here are a couple of quotes I found online from Reddit.com. Interesting stuff!

FROM THE BOOK: ZZ TOP – BAD AND WORLDWIDE (ROLLING STONE PRESS, WRITTEN BY DEBORAH FROST): “Linden was always doing computer studies. It was something that fascinated him, like studio technology. He thought he might understand the components of popular songs better if he fed certain data into his computer. It might help him understand what hits (song releases) of any given period share. He first found out about speed; all the songs he studied deviated no more than one beat from 120 beats per minute. Billy immediately started to write some songs with 120 beats per minute. Linden helped out with a couple, like UNDER PRESSURE and SHARP DRESSED MAN. Someone had to help Billy out. Dusty and Frank didn’t even like to rehearse much. Their studio absence wasn’t really a problem though. The bass and drum parts were easily played with a synthesizer or Linn drum machine.”

FROM THE BOOK: “ZZ TOP – BAD AND WORLDWIDE” (ROLLING STONE PRESS, BY DEBORAH FROST): “With the release of their ninth album, ELIMINATOR, in 1983, these hairy, unlikely rock heroes had become a pop phenomenon. This had something to do with the discoveries of a young preproduction engineer (Linden Hudson) whose contributions, like those of many associated with the band over the years, were never acknowledged.”

FROM THE BOOK: SHARP DRESSED MEN – ZZ TOP (By DAVID BLAYNEY) : “The integral position Linden occupied in the process of building Eliminator was demonstrated eloquently in the case of song Under Pressure. Billy and Linden, the studio wizards, did the whole song all in one afternoon without either the bass player or drummer even knowing it had been written and recorded on a demo tape. Linden synthesized the bass and drums and helped write the lyrics; Billy did the guitars and vocals.

Also here’s a pic below of the credits on the back cover of Eliminator. It does not say anywhere where it Eliminator was recorded.

Oh thats right  it was recorded over at Linden’s place.

Something to think about Folk’s!

  1. I was inspired by you and sent out some questions to a local singer in a local band who happens to also be the lead singer of Boston. I heard back from the manager that he would get him to answer them, but haven’t heard anything yet. We will see.

      1. Tommy’s first ever show with BOSTON was here in Tbay! Micheal Sweet was also with Boston…
I reviewed this show a ways back…it was Eddie Money and Kim Mitchell as openers but we had so much rain as it was an outdoor show that Money Man didn’t play due to time limits by the time the show got under way. Also heard that the Money Man was beyond loaded so who knows what the deal was…
But yeah their is some trivia for ya in regards to Tommy!

  2. Some fascinating stuff, this. I was obsessed by this album for a while a few years ago and read a fair bit about this Hudson stuff. Apparently Billy & Co. paid him over half a million for Thug (I assume a settlement, given there’s no credit anywhere). But his input and influence has been lasting, when you consider the ZZ Top sound over the years (even Billy’s last solo album had some heavy synth sounds).

    1. Your correct on Thugs as well…
ZZ and Synth go hand in hand well since than and I read that he Hudson was involved in some capacity with El Loco as well…
Who knows for sure but it goes to show you how this industry works….

    2. Linden. I know this is a real long shot, but is there any way you would dub another cassette of those recordings for me. Having something like that sit in a shoebox seems like such a shame. If your copy gets lost or damaged, let me know and I will send mine back.
Obviously I would pay for it, and whether yes or no, I am putting your name on my copies of Eliminator. It’s a start.
      Stay safe.

    3. My first time hearing of and using flickr. My first time hearing of the injustice towards you Linden.

I’m curious. Did this sway you from attempting more co-writes with others. You have a talent.
In 2018, the technology with Skype etc. should allow you to co-write worldwide with bands. I know some Canadian bands you could help out.
      Make some backpacking cash.

  5. Well i noticed u mentioned that u thought i could not be found, so i thought it would be funny to magically appear. Are u in Canada? Just curious. Anyway, i dont know what to add to the story, but i offer to answer any questions should folkz hav any. Dont fear to ask. If theres something that i feel makes me uneasy to answer, ill just say so. truth is ok to talk about, however some issues should stay unspoken. But im still upset about it all, billy knows it. I speak my mind usually. There are still good memories to me as well. Its late here so adios for now.

      1. deke, I have a sound file, and I don’t have a place to park it in order for it to be exclusive to this site (don’t know how). So send me an email (i guess) and I’ll return an email with the Billy G practice comedy out take. It’s funny and you’ll be the only site with it parked.

  7. Here’s a youtube video that someone spent some time making and the soundtrack they used is a song that I totally wrote and had a copyright on which was on the Eliminator album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6kI1-lIu9I&list=RDw6kI1-lIu9I&start_radio=1 , I love seeing all this thug footage with my song. Of course after I spent time learning how to sue a band and spent lots of time with lawyers they settled with me and ZZ owns it. But, they still don’t acknowledge who wrote it. Should I get on with my life and move on? Why. I get some pleasure sometimes thinking about it. Im old, I have to get joy somehow.
